Shubbery.............................

minimans

Trains, Planes, Automobiles & Shooting
Well I was intending to go to work today but, it's Saturday and the sun is shinning and I own the firm so sod it I'll play trains instead! but a problem in paradise.................it's been raining hard for a week between glorious sunny spells and that means sun+rain=weeds!! all in the track and garden so while a 2080 with short freight trundled around I set to ridding the garden of weeds. anyway I got about 50% done before showers halted play, it's now 7:pm and the sun is back so camera in hand I documented my work. I hope you enjoy. No trains but then again this is the shrubbery section!!

As can be seen my railway is truly a garden railway, to me the shrubbery is equally important as the trains and I try to blend it all in a cohesive way...................all right put the beverage down now Paul................

another one of those Bonsai starters 2 years old now and will need shaping at the end of the year
These are good value at only $2.50 each at the Bonsai nursery each sprig is taken from
the nursery's own bonsai stock.

Paul-

Question....much of my railway is in the shade.

Is any of yours shaded? If so, what shrubbery have you found does well? ALso, what about the Baby Tears, I really like them in the first pic in your second post in the cut.

Granted, I am USDA zone 6, I think you are 8-9?

Actually Garrett most of the railway is partly shaded and the section under the Walnut tree is shaded all day until the late afternoon. I have found most of the trees and small shrubs do well in the shade/part shade, the baby tears does well in the sunnier sections but HAS to be kept damp, as can be seen in the cutting which gets zero sun the baby tears thrives in fact it needs to be kept in check or it will cover the rails in a day or so!! Obviously the moss's do not like the sun at all really but seem to tolorate it until it gets hotter in the summer, possably because I keep the railway well watered in the summer.

THANKS! Just what I needed to know. A plus is my railway is right by the hosepipe!

Hi miniman,

oh well, i like those pictures!
Especially the babytears are looking great to fill the space between the RR and the landscape as a kind of hogweed-bushland or other growth that comes up on the RR dam.

Very fine arranged and good pics, too!

If u like, send me a PM about how the babytears are settled in those broadspread carpets. (and perhaps how its called in latin language....)

Greetings

Frank

Nice update Paul. did the dogs ignore the plants and just wreck the tracks?

Looking really inspiring Miniman :admire:
(always wanted a Hillman Imp myself) love the landscaping - don't have any trouble with growing moss on rocks here in Wales UK but struggling to find some of the the small plants locally - I have used Lemon Thyme and Mind Your Own Business and box hedging for trees... been building my steel suspension bridge again today (now that the rain has cleared away)
Keep up the good work!

Here in Northern California it never really gets to be winter Frank, frosty mornings are very few around here but we are really close to the ocean. so warm fog is the norm. My Baby tears does not die in the winter it goes dormant, gets a bit black in patches but comes back as soon as the weather warms up. It really is a vigorous grower in the spring needing constant pruning but the good news is you can tug it out by the roots and put it somewhere else! So perhaps you could pull up a bunch as winter starts and bring it indoors to be relaid in spring? The only other caution is keep it damp it hates to dry out or burn, in the summer when the rain stops I water the railway twice a day for 15 minutes with a giant spray system.

Yes it is raining as well this is a test!!
