Much to the delight of Mrs Rio >:(,i`ve started(well at least looked at)the next project,i1ve had these old ladies for a couple of years and now its time to mess them about, possibly old starter set stock(?) I keep putting them off, pleased with the private car results they seemed to be the next obvious choice,i`m going to upscale them,to about 22.5,as they are 1/29,overall size is good so should look fine behind my locos, also match in better with Bachmann JS cars, :)well have a go at least! When i got them secondhand,no interiors, plastic wheels, scraped and cracked windows, previous owner had tried to remove those horrible painted on curtains, bad job, although the car outsides were ok so they got a little use but not a lot,so time for changes. So far a track test has been done, that was fine, although plan to change to metal wheels, windows out,end vestibules removed, handrail, brakewheel sections now gone, just really down to a box with a roof and wheels! As for the rebuild, new interiors, with soft upholstery (maybe)panelling, blinds, lighting, glazing, handrails, brakewheels all planned, then of course a repaint, varnish and lettered :)and there`s two to do!!!!!Not seen many of these cars on here to use as reference,so with luck they should turn out fine ;D ;Da few bits and bobs to gather together before building starts soon,oh n that all important glue fix test!Rio

At last some progress!,taken ages but panelling cut and "dry run" fitted, end doors still open but tried to cover the hinges, nothing yet fixed in place, glazing will fit between the car sides and the interior panels, using the recesses in the car sides, first coat on some of  the internal parts, although still working on the combine end, bachmann seats being reworked(from PRIVATE AND PAY CARS)never throw anything away ;),conductor in pics for effect only, still a long way to go!!!! :)

This is yet another project I shall follow with (self) interest. I have a couple of these and I really like them. I gave them an external makeover, reglazed and put on metal wheels, but the prospect of making complete interiors was a job too far for the time being. I like where yours are going and monitoring your progress might yet inspire me!

Re: Sierra cars, making at least a start,

Very smart looking cars you have there,,,,,,in fact i have 4,the two i am working on and 2 D&RG(yellow)but apart from the removed vestibule ends and new handrails they are staying "stock"track lighting, smoke stacks, full interiors etc,run them as visitors in from Colorado ;)but the two in the pics above really needed some love and attention and time will tell how they turn out!! :) :)who knows, inspiration may yet come! :) ;)

A little more progress,I wanted soft seating in the cars and came up with this, the Bachmann seat sets have been reworked, not much more than cut about and tidied up together with addition of armrests, green felt then cut to size and siMply glued on,only problem is it stretches!Once the glue has gone off(and all seats covered) a very sharp blade should solve the problem and I should end up with tidy seating :)some experiments with rattle can varnish just may harden it up enough to help with crisp edges also, will have to see,but for now i`m getting the basic idea of what finished result will be :D :D

Re: Sierra cars, making at least a start,

Amazing, how you can achieve so much with so little. I'm impressed.

Re: Sierra cars, making at least a start,

I think you are spoiling your passengers ;D But, seriously, nice work!

Re: Sierra cars, making at least a start,

Spoiling them Mick?naaa, can just charge em more for the seat!!!!! ;),,,,only problem is I`ve got to finish the things first!! :)

Re: Sierra cars, making at least a start,

Beautiful! :)

A little more progress, nothing glued in place yet, lots of trimming to do,the arm rests to be changed from padded to wood look when done, the blind sets are nearly ready when the interior is finished, still all in one coat and the end beams and handrails dry fit,if only for effect at this time, had some figures in my box of bits, these have been modified to fit the Bachmann seats, shortened their calves, keep the feet on the floor ;)I don`t just cut the legs off so they fit, they too need filing, filling and shaping before paint :)

Re: Sierra cars, making at least a start,

They are coming on very nicely Neil. Did you spray them? Look to have a nice even finish.

Re: Sierra cars, making at least a start,

No Mick, brush, rarely use spray unless weathering, there are exceptions to that, but prefere old fashioned way! :) started on the external roofs today, going well till i ran out of paint!!! :'(

Lots done over the weekend :),still lots to do,but gradually taking shape now :) ;)internal panels varnished and fitted, blinds in,lettering on and exterior first coat varnished, end beams on,brakewheels fitted etc, still loade to do,roofs and seating to finish, glazing(without glue),handrails, passengers, lighting, wheels and couplings to sort, but they are coming together now :) ;) I started to take pics outside, but thr rain started and the raindrops on the roof were overscale, oops ;)

Re: Sierra cars, making at least a start,

Looking good Neil - like lettering too.

Re: Sierra cars, making at least a start,

Very nicely done. Some useful ideas here - hope you don't mind if I pinch a few?

Rik

Re: Sierra cars, making at least a start,

Thanks guys,the lettering is Woodland Scenics dry rub(what i normally use)and as for borrowing any ideas,,,,,,,,feel free :) :) :) :) :)

Re: Sierra cars, making at least a start,

They look great! So much better, in my opinion, than the original with the half enclosed vestibules. The proportions of the roof line, on these cars, is what I like.
