Smoke Unit plastic covering....

For the want of a better place to put this I have added it here.....So if it should be somewhere else, then can a Mod move it...

Stripping a Stainz I have purchased for a sound and digi upgrade, I finally managed to get the smoke unit out by using one of Swmbo's crochet needles (Don't tell her) and pushing it out from below.

Daft question, the black plastic ish covering on the unit has semi split, just wondering if anyone has replaced/repaired one of these,
I have loads of heat shrink that may be up to the job, or does it need something more robust?

So i'll take it that a none of the above then! :-[

I did see at a show a FRR loco with smoke. The owner had cut the funnel off & replaced it with a smoke unit, the outer covering over the chimney stub & the smoke unit being shrinky sleeving.

Should be ok, plastic outer only keeps fluid in, only bit that gets hot is the element in the centre

Heat shrink tubing works fine. I've done it myself. 8)

I just thought of another type. Some heat shrink tubing has an adhesive on the inside. I've used it and it really works. Tried removing some from a wire splice once. It was a bugger. It does not leave any adhesive residue behind though, which is a good thing.

Got the rubberised type myself, various dia, so that's not a problem...

Not 100% certain it actually works, no smoke oil, but is on order, have also spare unit to hand as well...

Digi upgrade will continue with the arrival of the chip and speaker, they are in the hands of Royal Mail as I type...
