I had a fire that got out of control on my Edrig - don't ask! Anyway, all is running fine now except that the paint has been stripped from the smokebox door. What paint should I use to get it back to normal?

Halfords have a range do a range of spray on Very High Temperature (VHT) paints. Other makes are available if you Google using the term VHT. Max

Should really be matt black but satin will be better looking than gloss unless you like your engines to be x works looking, even then smokeboxes rarely got the varnished finish look. Though preserved railways these days are a different matter so yer pays yer money and makes yer choices.

Thanks. I've ordered some satin finish spray.

Cheers, Martin.

Its funny, Roundhouse seem to habitually outshop their locos in an all over gloss finish, Accucraft UK in satin. You see a lot of people on forums toning down their smokeboxes, at least, to a matt finish but retaining the gloss or satin colour paint work. As Jon says a matter of personal taste. I prefer an all over satin look, both locos and rolling stock as that seems the default in other products throughout the various scales. Max

This all reminds me of the story of the worker in a paint factory who fell into a vat of varnish and was drowned. It was a terrible way to go but he had a beautiful finish.
