Hi all,
First posting.. Be gentle with me! ;-}

Does anyone know of a UK source for replacement driven axles (I believe you have to buy the whole axle, with wheels and gear) for a Stainz please?
I have one which has ground one gear concave.. :-(

Welcome to the forum, Phil!

There are a couple of Stainz [strike]nutters[/strike] collectors on here (Hi Paul and Sparky! ;) ) who may pop up and be able to help you, but if not then the first trader I'd try would be Chalk Garden Rail in Kent:
http://www.chalkgardenrail.co.uk/acatalog/index.html < Link To http://www.chalkgardenrai...uk/acatalog/index.html

If they don't have what you need, then worth trying any of the other G scale traders - of the ones I have personally used, probably GRS in Princes Risborough has the next biggest range of spares and odd bits.

is this for a Clamshell Stainz or a later d Box one
if for a clamshell I have some axles

Er.. Not knowledgable enough to tell!
20212 on the bottom. LGB by Lehmann, 901069 on circular gold sticker.. Green cab. gold/black ?screen-print? LGB and 2 on cab. - If any of that helps?

I am beginning to realise that with the different iterations of these models, the 'rivet counters' can have a filed-day! <GRIN>.

It supposedly had been running fine, but was then stored for a time.. My guess is it had been chewing up the plastic gear(s) for some time. The motor runs quite nicely (on its' own), so I am hoping once I replace the driven axles, it will be a good first engine.

That's a standard D gearbox loco from 1999. The suggested UK retailers should be able to help you and may well have the gears on their own.

Yep, as Peter (Whatlep) says, that's pretty much a "current" model in terms of design and mechanicals; the six-digit number on the little gold sticker tells you when it was made, the first and last digits are the year (hence 9010609 tells you it's a '99 built example). The "Clamshell" gearbox that Sparky mentioned is the much earlier style used through the '70s and '80s which had a joint line running right down the middle of the underside, splitting it into left and right halves; the newer (and still current) design is often called the "Sandwich" gearbox, because it consist of a top plate, a main body and a bottom plate all held together by several screws. The "D" reference is to a little embossed letter D which may or may not be present on the gearbox bottom plate - yours will probably have it - which indicates (if present) that the gearbox is ready for easy conversion to digital (DCC) control; basically the "D" gearbox has four electrical connector pins (2 for track power, 2 for motor) while the earlier one without the D has only three pins, one of the track power feeds and one motor terminal being internally connected to each other, a connection that must be severed before a DCC decoder can be installed.

Most of us on here don't give a monkey's how many rivets there are on something (Rule 8 rules! ;)
), but it's handy to be able to tell the generations of LGB kit apart especially if, as you've found, you ever need spare parts. Many of LGB's designs, the Stainz being the classic example, have been around for 40-odd years now and naturally there have been some modifications and improvements over that time. You're quite right that they are wonderful and virtually bullet-proof little locos, there are plenty of Stainzes built from the late '60s and '70s that are still running happily today and giving a great deal of pleasure to their first, second and even third-hand owners!

OK, I'll stop boring you now..... ;)

Thanks for the potted history! Not boring at all..
I got this loco from Easy-to-overspend-Bay, with a second loco 'free to a good home'.. A (very) early Bachmann 762 Lyn. - Again, a non-runner. Motion hanging off. Lumps of lead floating about in the tanks. Wires from smoke switch cut. Gearbox not great. Chimney missing.
But I was more pleased with getting a 'British' outline loco than the Stainz!!

I will get the Stainz going first, as it is probably more bomb-proof than the Lyn. - And easier to get the parts for. I will also have to justify the cost of a sound decoder and find a suitable soundfile for it. I suppose we all spend more 'modding' than can *really* be sensibly justified. But hey, if it raises a smile and keeps me sane..
Thanks again,
Phil.

You however may find with current selling prices that to buy a good used loco will not cost that much more than a couple of gear / wheel sets from a dealer.

A little caveat....
My experience with butchering Lehmann Porters has shown that when the gears are worn out, the brass worms are often worn down.
Do check first.

Now that is just greedy! ;-}
Third from left on back-row looks a bit dodgy..

Seriously though, I saw a grey Stainz on eBay the other day. Also a Matra crane in the same livery. - Was this ever genuine, or a clever paint-job, do you know?

The grey No.8 Stainz is a genuine LGB scheme, but never available as a separate item; with the matching Matra crane it was part of a limited edition starter set - it came with another truck (possibly with a pipe load, can't quite recall) and the usual circle of track, powerpack etc. There was a similar set done all in blue, also with a Stainz, a crane and a pipe-loaded wagon, which you occasionally see around in whole or parts. There are lots and lots of other differently painted Stainzes from special-edition sets, including a yellow "Deutsche Post" one, several red ones (Christmas or Anniversary celebration ones), the white Circus Train one and many more.

Hi Phil
Glendale Junction is the place. Part number CL30338. These are the cogs for the Stainz loco. They are £5.50 each.
Hope this helps!

Ah, brilliant! A part number, just what the doctor ordered, many thanks i will give them a ring. - I tried an email to them the other week.. Nothing. Get the feeling they are not good Internet-wise?? <Opinion Off>.

There have been at least 2 grey different Stainz locos that I know of both from sets. Most variants were only sold in sets and for many years the Stainz was only available in starter sets.
The No.8 came in a set with a grey crane and 2 grey bolster wagons with 3 lengths of straight track, there was a similar all blue set with a pipe load on the bolsters, both were sets for the German market.

Caroline at Glendale is normally pretty good at answering emails - but note they are closed Mondays and Tuesdays, so that may affect responses....

Has anyone experience of pressing off wheels and gears on the Stainz. - Or LGB loco's generally?

I have a 62006 pack of gears/axles, but they are for the later version. Keyed axle-ends and screws to hold the wheels on.

I did spot complete axles with wheels on eBay, am unable to find them now. They were also from the States, so probably prohibitively expensive.
TIA,
Phil.

I have just spotted the valve linkage on the black No 4 above.
Is it a one off?

My black no 4 is a bitsa it is quite rightly as Paul States a Older Loco on a newer chassis block

Both mine are older ones then, not that I am surprised.
One came from Germany and had been sitting in a display cabinet for decades.
It is now well and truly run-in.
