Anyone replaced a old split mech with a modern D mech, I have a couple of stainz's that have damaged mechs, but I have 3 or 4 new D mechs

Looking at them i reckon i Can change the front sections over, but will have to trim the chassis where the pickups are, as the older mechs have different pickups. the newer plastic slidebars seem to fit in a old front end.

Hi Sparky,
I am embarking on a major winter project to upgrade my older Stainz to DCC. I have looked at a number of ways to resolve the following issues:

a. How to fit a suitable chip into the boiler without resorting to major surgery of the boiler weight?
b. How to efficiently covert the older motor blocks to separate out the track feed and to have separate motor leads?
I have discovered by trial and error that it is possible to swap the motor blocks, however this is a very expensive option. One thing to note that is that you must use the original cylinder chests with the metal valve gear or the new cylinder chests with the plastic valve gear. You can't mix and match. I will take some photos at the weekend.

I have also looked at suitable chips in addition to the LGB 55021 and Massoth equivalent. I have exchanged a series of emails with Arnold Hübsch of Zimo in Austria and have just purchase 3 MX632 chips which he says are suitable for the Stainz. They are considerably smaller than the LGB/Massoth chips.

im not sure i fully understand the issue
what i did, after having purchased an abused clamshell old stainz, on ebay (lightly used, runs great ...bs!!)
i couldnt find axels (the gears were badly worn-poor thing musta been hauling cinder blocks on a grade)

so,
i bought several of the latest d boxes -four pin types-for less than the motors price alone
the new block assembly drops right in to the old bodly and accept the old linkage no problems
the rear section-like cross heads-is a bit more complicated as there i no place to screw into the new block
i jumpered two of the pins to the others so i have track direct to motor

I had to use a new linkage as the metal one was badly broken
but i've got the whole block and linkage to fit a Old chassis
