Stainz (or similar) battery conversion?

I tried searching on here for a thread about the conversion of a Stainz to battery power and it looks as if the thread has now been lost. A Google search has drawn a blank. Does anyone know of any other source of info for converting a Stainz to battery power? I'd like to point a fellow modeller to a simple LGB battery conversion so if not a Stainz does anyone know of a website showing a conversion for any other LGB loco (eg an Otto or a trail car?)

Do you want the batteries and electronics to be housed in the loco?

Great thanks. Not sure why this didn't come up when I searched.

Either really. The chap has asked about an easy way to convert a loco so I suggested a trail car and a Stainz but then wondered whether he wanted something a bit more sophisticated so thought I'd offer him both options.

I have trailing cars for my power and electronics. I found it more cost effective since each locomotive doesn't need to be fitted with costly R/C equipment. And since I run all LGB locos, the transfer of power from the battery car to the loco is made very simple by using the lighting socket on the rear of each locomotive. My R/C equipment of choice comes from G Scale Graphics.

I had a problem with batteries overheating on charging so in the end abandoned the holders with springs and soldered together 12 tagged batteries, from -

Here's mine - ready for the battery to go in.

All the gubbins will fit in the cab.

I can't be doing with a loco that can't run light :D

Could we have some details please eg ESC type, radio control type, where the batteries go etc.

I have 2 stainz that are just begging to be converted.

yes, please do, paul
I would prefer not to have to haul a tender

......if I was buying again the kit that Rik uses (Name escapes me at the moment) is smaller and cheaper.
It's Deltang Paul. Combined receiver/ESC is £30. It will work with a standard Spektrum DSM2 Tx or you can use a small handheld Deltang Tx which costs £21 as a kit (or £46 assembled). The kits only require soldering wires to the switches etc - no fiddly electronic component soldering.

Paul love all this work, I have an LGB 20761 Tank that I am looking at turning into a Battery Locomotive. My plan was to use Aristo Kit as I do not like the Aircraft Type of RC. Another option is the Timpdon UTX2. Both of these have an RC Hand Unit that is around the size of or smaller than an LGB hand RC Controller. However they do appear to need 12v Plus. I reckon I can just about stuff sufficient rechargeable batts into this loco as it is a Side Tank. Would be tricky with the Stainz without going to your unloved Tender Option. Same hate of Tenders for me.

However would be interested to see the size of the Cree Battery. 2 of these would certainly give me the Voltage required.

Sorry another pic request. Shot of Cree Battery next to the Loco pretty please???

I have done a 2076 Tank engine with battery and R/C gear from Hobbyking, unfortunately I use the aircraft controllers, so probably not everyone's cup of tea but it works for me.

All batteries contained in the loco I have used 9 NiMh batteries giving 10.8V, but at top speed with that voltage it looks unrealistic and I use not more that 3/4 throttle max.

I have pictures and a description if anyone wants them.

Ok Paul, probably no need for the Pic. How long roughly did she run for before the Batts gave up, presumably after a full charge?

Nice one Paul. I like the idea of running the smoke unit from track power and the motor from battery - a sort of hybrid.

Looking good, Paul. Assuming the loco draws around 1A, sounds like those batteries must be somewhere in the region of 1000mAh.

Took a bit of finding (none of the suppliers linked on their website seem to stock Deltang stuff anymore) but I've just ordered a Tx21 kit and an Rx61-2.
This will be my first foray into battery power... How hard can it be?? :o

Dead easy once you get the basics - http://riksrailway.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/getting-started-with-battery-power-and.html
