Stand alone controller DIY

Hello, I am looking to build a stand alone digital controller, all I can find is systems that use smart phone apps. Not a lot of good on a bright sunny day. My choice would be PWM speed control with blue tooth connection to loco, (A larger range is possible with a different radio link) I have a box with sufficient space on the 45 deg lid to incorporate a mimic display of the track. Although I am well into Arduino, I can't find anything.
My question is does anyone know of any information on the web that will help me. Many thanks for any replies.
Keep chugging.

MERG, Model Electronics Railway Group ,could prove useful.

Search this on the USA sites, there are several people doing this. There is also a "universal" hand held remote with a monochrome LCD that is extremely visible in the sun, but it costs several hundred dollars.

Search on mylargescale.com and largescalecentral.com quite a few people have popped up over the years, many using Arduino. Your biggest issue will be making a handheld controller inexpensively (but you can do it with 3d printing) and sound, you won't get sophisticated, load controlled and synchronized sound easily.

Here's one person, he's pretty prolific:

just search bluetooth on the various forums, or arduino... you will get lots of hits.
