Station Fencing

Now, I know I am being lazy here, but quite a bit of stuff was posted recently about station etc fencing made out of coffee stirrers. I have now ordered a million of these things and want to have a go at this. The thing is I cannot actually find the threads which related to this. Could one or two of you point me in the right direction, you know I'm looking for advice on how to make a jig, spacings, what sort of glue to use, do I need to paint the fencing with preservative and so on. OK, OK I'm sorry I didn't pay more attention at the time, but if I can't ask you lot, who can I ask?

I'm with you Cy; I have a similar project in mind for shortly ["Don't call me Shorty!!!"]

Cheers Steve!

It were pretty 'tout suite' weren't it?:thumbup:

I've marked it so I don't loose it again.

I think it's some sort of wax to try to make them a bit waterproof.

Ah quite so Kimasabi. But I can shed some light on this. If you observe the stirrers closely you may notice that the waxy substance is on one side only and this is because its true purpose is to provide lubrication when these are die cut from the sheets of Poplar or Birch. How do I know this I hear you ask, well its because I have an enquiring mind and was looking in a craft shop at these things and on one packet it had written that "Glue may not adhere to one side of this product" and on others "Caution water based paints may peel from surface" so curiosity aroused I asked the manufacturer and that was the reason given. Mind you these are Australian stirrers I'm talking about and the Poms who are reknown for over doing everything may put the wax on both sides.....

Yeah, but Trev, aren't all your stirrers (and everything else for that matter) upsidedown anyway???:bigsmile::bigsmile:

No, but we are renowned for our stirrers down here!

You will have to throw away the stirrers with the wax on the wrong side :rolf::rolf:

Just like only using left handed nails, striped paint and sky hooks....................:laugh:

I was in my local crafts store last night for some small stirring sticks for epoxy glue (bridge construction) and i found a line of ready made white picket fencing about 3 ft long for $3.99 and very good it looked too! so try a art/craft shop maybe they will have something similar in the UK?

Yep, nothing like being an antipodean agent provocateur!!!!
There is ready made fencing available designed for the "dolls house" industry. Try an eBay search .... Its a lot more satisfying and cheaper to make your own.
