Stuck smoke unit (LGB 2076D)

Well, now Ive gone and done it.

I was trying to get my old 2076d to smoke properly, so after some research on similar models I went ahead and did what I saw, tried pulling it it with a pair of needlenose pliers.

And ..it broke.

I don't want to mess anything else up, regardless of how simple it looked to replace it. Is the outer "tube" of the smoke unit going to just need some convincing to remove, or am I missing something?

I guess I'll need to replace it regardless now that I snapped the middle part off as well

Any suggestions, oh experienced train masters?

It could be the wires are short, so holding it in..

But, more likely, with age and use it has 'welded' itself into the stack.

There is another option, but I do not think it applies to this model?
Is there a nut under the loco, directly inline with the stack?

If there is then the stack is bolted through the loco, and you replace the whole unit, not just the reservoir and element.

It doesn't look like there's anything in line with the smoke stack. I agree with you, age and corrosion have definitely struck
 
Wires inside from the circuit board to the bottom of the smoker, you needed to have remove the body which is not that difficult. There are screws either side just behind the piston accessible from underneath, remove these. Then a clip just below a screw on the smokebox, pressing this releases the front of the body that is held by a lug at the rear and bottom of the coal bin . Yours is a much older beast than mine but the process will likely be the same.

Alright, I'll give it a look. Do you happen to know what part number the smoke unit is? I did some googling and had a hard time finding anything

The parts PDF I found just has a vague "part number 64" for the smoke unit

Sorry not sure but I expect someone will pop in, there are possibly 5,18,20 or 24v versions but yours being an older one likely to be one of the lower V ones I think?
 
The 2076 diagram from LGB shows what may be the 5 volt smoke stack. On many engines all I had to do is open the front of the boiler to see the light and smoke unit wires. The 2076 diagram shows one screw near the front of the boiler and attaches to item 13 which is 'flexable' in that I assume it can be pressed to remove the boiler front. Not having this engine this is my best guess.
