Styrene to wood

I've been using styrene to model all of my "wood" structures, and have gotten pretty good at making it look like old, weathered wood. Here's a project I've been working on lately as an experiment to see how far I can go with it. I built up one wall, board by board, trying to get it as close as possible to the prototype. This will be featured in an article I'm writing for Westlake Publishing's "Modeler's Annual", showing how to turn styrene into wood.

First, here's a photo of the prototype, part of a dilapidated old house in Tonopah, NV:

And here are some shots of the 1/24th scale model wall:

The nails are tiny pieces of .020" brass rod, inserted into drilled holes. I wanted to use .015" rod, but didn't have any available locally and didn't want to wait to have some shipped.

I haven't decided yet whether I'll build the entire structure, or just complete this section of it and attach it to different building.

Enjoy!

"pretty good" is an understatement! Exquisite detailing and consumate skill comes to my mind. A pure delight to see some more of your work Ray!

I agree, anything you could say about that workperson ship would be an understatement.... very proffesional finish there.... I'd like to know your technique!

Wonderful, awesome modelling at incredible attention to detail, both the scribed and distressed plasticard and the painted weathered finish.

GULP!! That is amazing!!! Love to know how you did the knots???

Thanks! The knots are slices of styrene rod inserted into drilled holes. The largest are 1/8" diameter.

Ray, you are undoubted the master of all things modelling, detailing and landscaping. When are you bringing out the book to help us lesser mortals try to achieve somewhere near to your fabulous output? I have just made a building out of real wood and the surface effect doesn't look near as good as your one using darned plastic!

Hi,

Ray has said that there will be possibly be an article in the 'Modelling Annual' published by Westlake Publishing - the 'Modelling' annuals come out in the Autumn, and are sold in the UK by SPV (no connection), their website is at http://www.spv.co.uk < Link To www.spv.co.uk - the old one is listed on their site at the moment, if you want to have a look at the contents, the scales are mostly below G scale but there is more articles slowly appearing in our scales.

Goto 'online shop', then 'books and annuals' and scroll down in the 'annuals' section.

The cost is likely to be about £20 incl.post in the UK
