Swift Sixteen Tram

For the past few weeks I`ve been building a Swift Sixteen etched brass tram kit. The day after I ran Dougal for the first time, I was able to achieve  another first when I gave the tram a test run. It runs on a Roundhouse Bertie chassis which I will add r/c to once I`ve finished building the body. There`s still quite a bit left to do including all the condensing gear on the roof but I`m very pleased with it so far. Its also very easy to build and if anyone is tempted to get this kit I would thoroughly recommend it.

Oh yes.... very nice.....

it looks a beautifull kit..

Very impressive. Both the kit, and your construction. Can't wait to see more.

Certainly an object of desire. Have been thinking of one of these for a while. Maybee my Birthday Present to me.

I've started on the condensers tonight, 40 plus tubes to solder but it should be worth it! I'll need to start thinking about painting it soon!

Got one of these waiting in the workshop, complete with a chassis.
All ready for me just to start work on it...

I think that I might get mine professionally painted though.

Looking forward to seeing more of yours.

I`ve now fitted it with radio control, just on the regulator as being slip eccentric there is no reverser and it is far more controllable. I`ve also finished the condensing tubes on the roof of the tram. I didn`t opt to buy a chimney, I turned my own from a piece of brass so that it fits under my bridges. I also turned a longer one from some aluminium bar I had to run on lines with no bridges. In the photos I`ve seen, they seemed to have quit long chimney to clear the upper deck of double deck cars.

She's a beauty ! As said above painting could prove tricky

Having seen this has prompted me to print off the instruction and get on with my build...... got the body shell made but got the detailing to finish off such as the roof and tubes...........

I suspect that the chimney extension would also aid steaming. Remember that the exhaust is traveling through the condenser and not up the chimney?
Couple this with the roof and I should think that they probably didn't steam very well.
The only reason they got away with poor steaming is the trams never pulled long trains, traveled long distances between stops or tackled long grades.

Well, I`ve finished and painted the tram with just a few small bits left to do such as paint the interior. I might attempt some lining later but for now I think I`ll stick with the plain maroon. Despite the weather I managed a quick run at the weekend and was able to grab a couple of quick flash assisted photos.
