Taking the new KoF to bits....

It may be a little premature seeing as I haven't actually got the sound unit for it yet, but curiosity overtook me and the new KoF is now in bits to see what needs to be done to install the sound.
Now, why is the KoF like a small toadstool? Because there's not MUSH ROOM INSIDE!! HaHaHaHaHa..... OK, I'll get my coat.

Getting it apart was a bit of a b*gger in the first place - it's definitely not quite as intuitively put together as some LGB locos I've dismantled, and a certain amount of head-scratching was required to figure out exactly which of the many screws visible underneath had to come out. In the end I realised that once the front coupling and its mounting plate is removed, that allows you to get at a couple of very small screws sunk a LOOOONG way down a couple of deep holes - these are what holds the hood onto the chassis. Removing the rear coupling and the four rather more obvious cab securing screws enables you to separate both hood and cab assembly from the rest of the loco, exposing - Ta-Daaaah - a standard LGB onboard loco decoder mounted vertically to an L-shaped weight block.

Now, the GOOD news is that it's already been designed for an easy speaker installation, with a Massoth 40mm square-mounting speaker - in fact there is a groove moulded into either side of the hood just behind the radiator grille, and the speaker is just an easy push-fit into this slot! The bad news, as alluded to in my poor joke above, is that once the speaker is installed in it's designed spot, there is then b*gger-all space anywhere for the actual sound unit to go! The decoder and the weight that it is screwed to basically takes up the full width and height of the inside of the hood, and the back of the speaker is very close to the front of the weight; the only possible space left under the hood at all is actually in FRONT of the speaker, between it and the radiator grille at the front - which is a bit of a silly place, and I don't think I'll be putting it there. There is also no room behind the decoder, or in front of/underneath the cab - which really leaves the only option as putting it IN the cab. Though I don't mind that TOO much (an S module is fairly small and unobtrusive, and if it goes on the cab floor it shouldn't be very visible once the driver figure is in place) but it does seem a bit unfortunate that there is no-where else for it at all.
The other option, of course, would be to dispense with the onboard decoder altogether and replace it with a Massoth LS, but I really don't want to start ripping into a brand new loco to that extent, what with all the fiddling about with re-wiring lights etc.
So, looks like it'll be in the cab, unless anyone else can see any better ideas from the photos here?

Jon, while its in bits, any chance of a picture of the electric motor and any writing on it? I want to know what motors LGB/Marklin are stuffing in these little beasties; as there are reports of LGB using Chinese motors. Many thanks best of luck with the conversion. Alyn
 
Hi Alyn, though I've separated the motor/gearbox block from the chassis, I wasn't intending to open or otherwise disturb the actual block unless I have to. If I DO have to open it for any reason, then yes, I'll certainly check what type of motor it is.

I've just saved enough pennies to buy one of these. I am thinking of removing the deconder and putting a 55021 in instead. Looks like 3 sets of wires for the front lights, 2 for the rear and one for the cab. But and this is where I always forget, is the polarity of the wires relevant? As long as I connect 3 wires to one front light terminal and 3 to the other does it matter which of the pair from each light it is?
 
Hello Nigel, can I ask why you're thinking about installing a 55021? I don't see what advantage this would give you over the ready-installed onboard decoder?
As to the lights, if they were conventional bulbs then the polarity wouldn't matter - but be VERY careful with the new KoF, as all the lights are actually LEDs mounted onto tiny printed circuit boards! I assume that this means they ARE all polarity sensitive, like all LEDs, so you'd have to do some very careful tracing of lots of very fine wires (all of which are black....). Given that all the lighting wire harnesses plug straight into micro-sockets on the existing decoder, trying to re-wire them for a 55021 would seem to be a fairly pointless exercise....?

Hi Alyn - further to this old post, today I received a sample copy of the German "VOLLDAMPF" magazine - and as luck would have it, there is an article in it about the new KoF, including a photo of the opened-up gearbox!

From that, I can tell you that the motor certainly LOOKS to be a standard LGB Buhler type - it appears to be identical to those in most of my other LGB locos, same casing and brushgear, with the short shaft at each end with brass worms, meshing with idler gears which then transmit power to the axle gears (the idler shafts are to permit the longer wheelbase than the old standard LGB 4-wheel motor block). So, I think any fears of Marklin using cheap Chinese motors instead of Buhler seem to be unfounded at present - unless, of course, the motor is actually a Chinese copy that just LOOKS exactly like a Buhler one.... ;)

Re:Taking the new KoF to bits.... the DB red version

Excellent aerticle from Zerogee, BUT.........has anyone tried putting sound in the DB Red version of the Kof ?
The hood does NOT have a groove for the speaker, and the body is about 3-4mm narrower, so the speaker will not fit.
You can do it by mounting the speaket at an angle of about 40 degrees and that JUST leaves enough room to get the hood back on, but it is a tight fit.
Having just done it, I must admit that the sound is very good. I still need to do a bit of tweaking with the CVs for volume and acceleration rate/top speed, but in the main a good loco.
