Following a chat with Paul-rhb of this forum, he advised me of a suitable g scale motor/gearbox that he was using.
There designed for robot kits, but seem very durable, and have 4 speeds to choose from

As I they cost £8-10 each from eBay I decided to investigate

Only buy them individually from ebay, as a pack of 2 might attract a customs fee, off £8!

The package contains
Motor, gears, and all the parts needed build and attach the gearbox to your project
They also run on 3-12v

There very small and compact, and seem pretty powerful for there size

All I’ve done is pull the wheels of the axles and they fit on quite well
Just need superglue to secure

Here’s some pictures

I’ve attached them to a piece of wood to make a simple loco ready to test them

Please let us know the test results! Did you mount standard LGB wheels on the axles?

So, I’ve had a chance to do some testing and the gearboxes and they seem ok.

However a few things to note

If you superglue all the wheels on, they you cannot change wheels or ratios- unless you remove the wheels with a hacksaw or dremel!

If you try and haul 4 stiff Bachmann bogie wagons, and use several lumps of lead as a ballast weight, you can strip the gears

It’s advisable to glue the worm to the motor, (instructions say friction fit)

This is my test chassis, after stripping gears, I used a bogie and one gearbox

This shows the battery test wagon, and a USA trains mighty moe, with two gearboxes fitted4A66F9A9-960C-4EDC-9C96-CDAD5CB42D5C.jpeg
This is short test train, it trundled round happily on about 9v and one gearbox.7F6BD9E3-F6BA-4AF6-A01D-F52E97799BA3.jpeg

So for a light duty, low power consumption adaptable gearbox, you can’t go far wrong, the fact that the 3mm hex shaft in the kit allows lgb wheels to slide on is an added bonus

Can provide more photos/videos but was to busy testing/bodging to take photos

Neat gearboxes. I remember a while ago there was a thread on the forum about axle mounted traction motors for trams. Look like they could be perfect for something like that.

have you got some type of description or part # to search eBay for?

I went for the 70188 - different layout but still a few coppers under £10 on Amazon :nod:

Rhinochugger, do you have any pictures of the project using the Tamiya 70188? Was the gearbox reasonably quiet and durable? I need to repower a Bachmann trolley that has very noisy gears. Thanks, Ken

Hi Father,

Not the quietest, but then how noisy is noisy? You can hear it come past, so it's not as quiet as a production locomotive. As you can see, the project - or projectile :D:D - is pretty lightweight.

Being a 'box on wheels', it will resonate anyway.. Would a little ?wadding? absorb some of the noise, perhaps? :wondering:

Anyway, it is an air-cooled engine, so it will be noisey! :D:D

Nah, it's not that noisy - it's probably, as you say, scale noise

Nice looking model. Can't quite see in the picture, but it looks like a battery connector and maybe a charging jack mounted in the floor. Radio Control?
