Having several live steam locos which have been neglected for a while and need a good clean I was wondering if anyone would like to share their techniques for polishing up small brass parts without damaging the paint around them.

Tomato sauce?

It is slightly acidic, due to the vinegar content.

It will certainly remove the tarnish....

Solvol Autosol. Chrome polish. Available from Halfords. It will put a shine on matt black paint so you do need to protect surrounding paintwork. I would suggest simple insulating/masking tape or similar.

Solvol leaves a longer lasting shine than other metal polishes, I use it on the big loco's brass and other shiny metal.

Brasso then Greased Lightning to cover with a wax finish

Get someone else to do it..
