Time to get the LGB out again!

Welcome to the Forum! It sounds like you've had lots of fun & use out of your LGB stock in the past, and the stage is set for the next generation . While the basics of track, locomotive and two wires remain the same, you'll find that things have changed over the years, too. Whatever you decide to do -stay as you are, or update- you'll find there is a lot of experience and advice here, if you need it. Just be aware of the humour; we are an international bunch, but the humour is...British. Which may or may not be a good thing...

Welcome and are you planning a permanent set up or a temporary set up when the nephews are around ?

Just a temporary setup from time to time... which allows for reconfiguring the track pattern every time!

I also have a substantial collection of American Flyer S scale equipment from my childhood in the 1950s. It gets set up from time to time as well.

I'm more interested in the "play value" of these things than being a long term "installation level" enthusiast.

Welcome to the forum. Hopefully the seeds of a good hobby will be sewn into you and the kids! Don't forget some pictures, we all like pictures, they're easier to cope with than words

Welcome to the madness....

Thanks for approving my membership. I discovered LGB in the 1980s when my kids were young. Now there are young nephews, so it's time to get them out again. Small setup, about 20 pieces of track, two switches/points, a Stainz 2010D Loco, some 100th anniversary coaches, handcar, and more.
Welcome to the Forum from Bonnie Scotland. As Northside said things change and move on but I'm still a analogue controller, two wire type of person. It's amazing how much fun you can have with 2 wires. This hobby can be as complex or simple as you wish the main thing is that you enjoy it!

Hi from the tiny section of Europe. Ditto what the guys have said above plus the usual: ask questions, feel free to profit from the (in)experience of all and remember the only stupid question is the one you don't ask.
Now on to the important stuff. What will you buying next? Remember it's for the kids.

Maintenance is the top priority at the moment.

I originally found this forum because I was looking for replacement bulbs for my two-axle Stainz-style coaches. The original incandescent E5-base bulbs seem to be unobtainium, especially in the US. But I found a post by phils2um from 2019 about LED replacement bulbs made by Schoenwitz and available from Modelbahnshop-Lippe as #50085. It seems these are still available (although the price has increased to EUR 2,51). So some bulbs are next on the acquisition list. Plus a bunch of track tie connectors (since I dare not fasten the track to our hardwood flooring) and perhaps some "official" LGB-recommended grease and bearing oil.

After that, I'll look into why the (apparently 16v) smoke unit isn't producing smoke - although from other posts here it seems the 16v design is not very "smoky" even at best...

Here is the current setup, which requires threading the right-of-way amongst table legs.

PS: I mis-spoke before... the potential new enthusiasts are GRAND-nephews! :)
