Tram Works Car conversion

Too much of a good thing is nearly enough.

Over the winter I have been building a freelance Works car for the tramway department, based on one of the 'toy' Bachmann toastrack cars. Whilst it isnt exactly a high quality scale model I am very pleased with the result.
An overhead tower wagon has been repainted to operate with it.

This was the state of play at the end of last summer.

In the 'works' along with some other toastrack tramcars just getting a repaint into fleet colours

...and finally the end result.
I will add extras like handrails etc in due course.

Very nice.... I like the tower too

Nice conversion - saw your post yesterday and I was in the middle of posting a comment whenn the power went off - always had an interest works cars (there were plenty in Leeds).

Your modeling has a precedent in the Leeds adaptation of one of the 1891 Roundhay cars for works duties (I know it's an enclosed car by Stephenson but its very similar to J&S cars of that period).

I think I may make a tower car from one of these. Leave the number 1 end intact till the first row of seats then cut through roof to the floor and remove everything else leaving the number 2 end with simply the drivers skirt and brake. Then on the floor make a tower on the floor. The trolley pole is moved to the short section of roof @ the number one end and the floor could have coils of wire etc placed on it. The 2 benches could be enclosed as storage or left open as staff seating....A single truck version of 99U, viz;

This Belgium tram has been converted to have the tower at one end rather than in the centre.
Another avenue to think about!

The high side door positions on my conversion were based one found in Germany. It stops the public thinking it is a service tram.

Some retain a few seats as you suggested and just have windows painted over.
Not a suitable solution for the windowless toastracks though!

Very nice, L R. Here's one I did (tower wagon and two works cars all are now being painted etc) plus some full size cars. Alyn

I see we go to the same places Alyn
Your photo of Car 628 ( and its trailer 729 ) is the same vehicle as in my post!
Its at a museum near Wuppertal that operates trams high up into the woodlands, a great ride.

Quite a few of the works vehicles need a bit of work to bring them up to scratch, but the tyred vehicles are not so lucky and are stored in the open. This splendid Mercedes from Solingen ( probably used on the trolleybus system as well ) has certainly seen better days.

Many thanks for these postings and a great conversion. What you get with works cars is a view of older trams that may have run on that or other lines, in fact many of the superb Trams that you see in museums have been reconverted back ton original from Works Cars. Great stuff.

I bought an old wreck of a tram, mainly for parts recovery. The remainder was unsuitable for passenger service but has been rebuilt for works service. There are a few more things to add but its coming along nicely.
