Someone asked me, and I didn't know, so I thought I'd ask here. What kinds of transformers should one used for Bachmann Big Haulers and LGB? AC? DC? voltages? Are they compatible with each other?

Thanks.

DC only, up to 24v gives you the most flexibility, but you can run lower voltages and get lower speeds.

You forgot amperage, the most important, since the smaller "starter" transformers are usually not capable of running larger locos, or 2 small ones...

If you will stay "analog" operation, buy a good one, it will last you years.

Yes, they are a lot more expensive....

sorry, I should have put this up front:

both LGB and Bachmann "starter" "transformers" are DC and both are around 1 amp. The LGB tends to go closer to 24v, while the bachmann tends to go to 18v, but unless you need the top speed they are not only compatible, but pretty much interchangeable.

But both are pretty much very limited as I indicated.
