Hi steve
i also want one my friend sandy has the idea and plans to do it....
Do you know what a lazy susan is? we're gonna use the base it's a Ball-bearing circle... which slides quite well...
if you do i'll post some pics when i next see the plans....

The Stainzmeister build a nice one using a Hornby one as its basis.

Only good for smaller locos though....

Best Idea i've seen is to use a car water pump! it's water proof and can be left out without fear of it seizing up as I'm sure the lazy Susan and TV turntables will as they have open bearings and were designed for indoors. Plus they have mounting holes built in for base and deck!!

Steve,
Only this morning I took our defunked Microwave to the dump.
Before I did I checked to see if there was anything worth saving.
Guess what the only thing worth saving was the the Turntable.
Does Paula need a new Microwave, I know you just love to going shopain. :wits:

I thought Steve already had a semi-defunct microwave in the garage?

IKEA sell a Lazy Susan for a very few £s (around £3 I think I paid), it is not the smoothest but could be doctored.

Minimans
Only three problems i can see : that looks like the water pump off a smallblock chevy and while it may look ok in princible i have issues with it

1/ The hole to bury the engine that powers it would be slightly on the large size
2/ Even on tickover im not sure many locos could endure the revs
3/ There arnt to many laying around in scrap yards on this side of the pond

Although the rumble of 300 horses though open headers maybe more of a consolation
Keep thinking mate there maybe hope for you yet

Well I was going to go for the old standby but the fuel consumption would be horrendous!!! but as you suggest the noise may well be worth it......................

You loonies.
I've been unable to work for 3 months due to depression, and have now just had to go and tell her wonderfulness why I was laughing so much, thanks
This is a real Rolls, as compared to a Royce

Now, just imagine the turntable...

I worked on that car when I was at Jack Barclays. Not a Merlin but a Rover tank engine same design but no superchargers. Had a single four barrel Holley trying to feed 27 litres you had to clamp off the air intake to get it to pull enough fuel to get it fired but boy when it did it was a noisy beast!! not the exhaust, well that too but the mechanical noise from the engine was horrendous !!

You don't mention whether you want a motorised one or a manual one. And whether you use track power. If you do, then the biggest problem you have is how to get power onto it.

I built a simple 'elevated ' one but an inground one could be the same. It has no fancy bearings - I just cast a bit of concrete with a 3/8" rod sticking out for it to rotate on. The turntable bridge is 2 pieces of 38mm plastic angle with a bit if 1" thick timber between.
It runs on 4 castor wheels hidden by some metal covers.

You dont know how close you are with this trevor , a short video of an earlier project :rolf:

Now that's a clever idea - a bit of lateral thinking. Not prototypical but nonetheless would seem to be very effective!

Nearly everybody thinks that turntables were just for trains but they were also used for trolleybuses - Christchurch on the Bournemouth system (ground level) and Longwood at Huddersfield (elevated). Also for trams - Bradford's works traverser at Thornbury for turning the trams 90 degrees from the approach track into the various "roads" in the works.

Not a lot of people know that (and many won't want to).

one more of unsolved problems and projects on the GSS site.
Turntable is something i have in my mind, a modular structure so everone can have the part of the table he wants. or a whole one.

But i didnt get to build my bridge ideas for ready, so the turntable lies asleep, waiting for a "rrrrring".

Greetings

Frank

They also used to turn cars if one has a confined parking space
