Two Black Locos

Hi folks
The two black locos in these two short videos bear a passing resemblance to each other, but couldn't be more different. In the first we have the 1985 Charles Pooter from Roundhouse, now with the timing adjusted and the meths burners performing well.

And in the second we have the Swift Sixteen Ragleth conversion pottering around with the burner low and a bare 15psi on the gauge.

These films were shot with very different still cameras. The first with a large Fuji HS10 on a bean bag and the second with a tiny Sony WX5 on a flexy mini-tripod.

The steam plume seems to be more than I usually see in live steam films. Also, I don't hear the sputtering and spitting, that I usually hear. I am not a live steam operator, so I don't know much other than what I see here on the forums, about live steam operation.

Hi Dan
The spitting and popping you often hear is on internally fired locos where the exhaust oil meets the very hot smokebox and vapourises. In the Charles Pooter, it is externally fired with a meths burner underneath, so there is no hot smokebox. The Ragleth conversion does occasionally spit and pop as it is internally fired, but I had the burner down low so there was very little. Also the chuffer produces the dominant sound so the popping is less noticeable.

The steam plume is at its best in cold weather and with a bit of low sun it can be very impressive. I guess most films of the films you have seen were made in the warmer weather - so not much plume.

Two fantastic locos Chris. I know you must have been told this a thousand time but you have a really superb railway:)

Two lovely films Chris, thanks for showing them to us:thumbup:

Thanks for the kind words guys - glad you enjoyed them :)

Dave, my railway is really quite small - but it is amazing what one can do with camera angles and a bit of cropping!
Cheers
Chris
