I've been looking at Jose's excellent post about his Stainz http://www.gscalecentral.net/tm?m=132992&high =
and got to thinking about what our Ultimate Engine would be like. Not so much what its a model of, but how it works and how its made.

Things like :
Digital/Analog/Track/Wireless/Steam ??
Sound and lights - what sounds , which lights ??
Brass/Steel/Plastic
Couplers - I liked the Krois ones on Jose's thread, but there are others...
Worm/spur/helical/bevel gears

What spec would your Ultimate Engine have ?

As we're not talking specific locos here I'll just go for:
Steam outline,
Big, with lots of wheels - probably two power bogies.
Full digital, loads of sounds, lights, generators etc. With plenty of volume.
A mega, pulsed, high output smoke generator (and additional generators for drain cocks - linked to F5 of course).
Pull like anything (or - pull anything!)
Plastic, brass not too fussed but loads of detail parts.
Bomb proof construction.
Mega train behind it.

My ultimate steam loco would be radio control, based on a recognised loco, sound like the real thing (i.e. deep bark) run for an hour on one fill and cost under £400.

My ultimate diesel would have sound and also have the smoke unit set to bellow plenty of black smoke through fan powered smoke units before the loco starts to move. I think battery power with radio control (even though I currently use track power). Batteries to last for about three hours running time. Apart from the black bit this should be possible - I've not played with dcc but I would think it ought to be possible to set the smoke unit to go big before the lococ starts to move. My ultimate loco would NOT have a light in the cab - you don't drive your car at night with the interior light on so why would a loco driver?

Not so sure about size - my heart likes the thought of big locos with lots of wheels but it has to be said that I run BoBos rather than CoCos most of the time because even with a reasonable sized line runing 18 foot trains bigger locos don't seem to suit so well as smaller ones.

Very nice too, but for me it would have to be a 20th RR (ZR) Garratt, live steam, of course. Now that's got lots of wheels Stockers.:thumbup::thumbup:

19D for me.....I love SA steam, the meld of US and british looks...superb.

im simple
id really love an 'old time LGB quality'
2-8-0 US narrow gauge engine, that can take R1's
or a 4-6-0 ng
and likewise a Mason Bogie 2-6-6 t

id love a tiny shay too-like 15- 20 tons-something similar to teh FRR series

and,
to come closer to train technology standards of today
id like synch smoke, class lights and sound options, if possible, for analog as well as DCC

Second guess would have to be either a GMAM or a EAR Class 56. Same wheels!

I would like a reliable " live diesel ",preferably a shunter of some description. That would be fun!

Most of mine are already available though rarely in one package -

Plastic or metal with fine detail.

Compensated chassis so it runs well whether small or large loco, gives uniform pulling ability and good pickup too as a result with all wheels doing what they should on the rails.

Lithium battery powered radio control so it can pickup from the track as a near constant charge or be plugged in and then run on dead track for 2-3 hours.
(Lithium means no battery memory effect)

Realistic sound unit with bass ported speaker for lots of umph when it's working hard.
Manual notching to increase power or produce coasting sounds when drawing to a stand.

Directional lighting with ability to switch off loco tail lights when on a train wired in rather than needing rewiring!

Prolific smoke unit that doesn't use oil and leave oily residue on loco and stock.

MMMmmm:bigsmile:

Probably this... http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=32883&nseq=1 < Link To http://www.railpictures.n...hp?id=32883&nseq=1
With fully Massoth sound, All driving wheels powered with pickups, all the bells an whistles :rolf:
The driving unit would be articulated like the LGB Mikado or 2-10-2...
Made out of brass
Anybody else like this as it would be a stunning loco

My ultimate engine would have to be a Accucraft brass live steam model of a Rio Grande K-28 #473 with radio control

A Pensy T1 4-4-4-4 shark- nose live steamer with a big bark box, working lights, whistle, bell and radio controlled.

Naughty Neil! :bigsmile::bigsmile:

Bit o' kit or WHAT!!!!:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:
Not mine Bob, unfortunately, but a G1 visitor that couldn't run due to my r3 curves elsewhere. Young feller by the name of Dibnah brought it to show me, wasn't his either, he was doing a job for it's owner, who shall remain nameless for security reasons. Cracker, isn't it!:bigsmile::bigsmile::thumbup::thumbup:

Just need to 'blind' a couple of axles, either end, and it'll go round R3s a treat! Crackers really as the real things were designed (mostly) for very poor track conditions and tight bends with max pos. power. Course, what Mr Peacock called tight, and what we run is a bit different. Love it!
