Hi, I'm 'looking' at getting a USA Trains GP7 or GP9, but need to know a couple of things before I put my request in for approval. Do they go round R1 curves? Although I'm wittiling out the R1s on my line I have no choice at one end due to space. Also, do they come with replacement hook and loop couplers? I'm not changing all my stock couplers for one locomotive!
Many thanks,
Tim

Re:USA trains GP7/9

I have one somewhere in the garage!!....if I recall, they do go around R1, but there is an issue with couplings swinging out so wide derailing following cars. Mine has Kadees anyway!!

Re:USA trains GP7/9

Do you know if they do that when coverted to lgb style couplers?

Re:USA trains GP7/9

It will go around R1 with LGB couplers BUT only with a shortish car behind. This allows the loco couplers to not pull the following car off as the shorter car will not have to need such a wide swing.

Re:USA trains GP7/9

Thanks Beavercreek, negotiations to begin soon. (When I get the guts to ask).
Everytime I see a picture of one, like yours Neil, I want one all the more. I'm after a Black Widow 9, but Lizzie took a liking to the Southern Pacific 7 in purple, which I like too but not as much as the widow. I saw a Black Widow on ebay a while ago, but was umming and erring at the time. Wish I'd just got it now. :D

I can confirm it is a lovely loco. I know. I won it!!

Seriously though, I have two now and run around the small curves easily but do look a bit silly.

Ah poo!! :rolf: :impatient: :rolf:
And you're just down the road from me too, literally!

Re:USA trains GP7/9

Thats some narrow gauge track you're running on there! :rolf:
Even swmbo said thats a lovely looking locomotive. I could be on a winning line here!

Re:USA trains GP7/9

yeah....I was having a laugh....

Nice detail, and all for a fraction of the price of LGB!

Re:USA trains GP7/9

If you like smoke and are buying second hand try to go for a later one. The early ones did not have fan assisted smoke units but the later ones do. I don't think there is a way of telling.

Re:USA trains GP7/9

Didn't know that, mine is one of the very first ones. I never use the smoke anyway, I have steamies for that!

Re:USA trains GP7/9

Mine is close to being in EWS livery :D
It has received a little weathering since these were taken.

Re:USA trains GP7/9

There's something about these things that sort of grabs you - I have a GP9 with dynamic brakes in Pensylvania livery, bought second hand (after I'd missed them new) after I'd really like the pic of them - probably all of two inches square - in one of the magazines, probably either MR or GR. I don't model the PRR, or in 1:29, but still have to have one..

How short a car? An example would be useful please!

Re:USA trains GP7/9

Pure freight loco? Oh no, the New Haven used them on top link passenger duties!! The NYC had passenger ones too, in the two tone grey as oppsed to black and grey, which mine is, hence the 'torpedo tube' air reservoirs on top, they had a boiler and water tanks in the way.....

Re:USA trains GP7/9

Garry, How short cars? 40 footers. Any thing over that and there is a colossal overhang through the R1 curve. I can get a 50ft Evans box car around the curve if I drive slow enough. But. it's ugly.

Chris M, Please let me know when you want to sell that USA Trains 44 tonner:love:
