Use Styrofoam packing to create portals

Used the styrofoam packing block to create this portal for a tunnel area on my layout. Rounded some of sharper edges and sprayed with several coats of spray paint. Notice that the spray paint will give a pebble look to the styrofoam surface. I have also used acrylic exterior house paint of some other styrofoam packing that I have re-purposed into track-side structures.

The adobe house looks good.. the portal looks somewhat "Cold War"! There's no reason not to use styrofoam unless you've big dogs that like to frolick around the garden or clumsy visitors, we have a castle built from EPS Styrofoam. We're not the first to use it though Chris Walas, a very well known modeller from the US has used it for buildings and a number of other garden railroaders have used it for both viaducts and bridges... certainly quicker than concrete. We're just building a 2nd gatehouse for our castle and from plans to fully carved has only taken us two days! IMG_5193 - Edited.jpg

So do people who model with styrofoam do it for a bit of 'light' relief ???

David
Yes! Whenever I can I like to re-purpose the already shaped styrofoam packing blocks. Because most of the building's shape seems to be ready made, needing only small modifications, completing a building is a bit of 'Light' relief!
