vertical boiler

Hi all,

I need a vertical boiler for a loco I?m building. One possibility is one from PPS as used on their De winton. Just wondering if there are any other manufactures out there?

www.alwayshobbies.com/Steam/Stationary/Wilesco-Steam-Engine-$9-D3.ice - this is a complete verticle boiler on a base with engine. Simple pot boiler I suppose.

Many thanks for the links guys.

PPS are quoting £100 for the boiler less fittings which may not be too bad. I think thats the route I will take, but it?s a shame they don?t take cards as I don?t have a cheque book (never used it in years!) Looking like it will come to about £230 including fittings. Need to think what to use as a regulator as want to RS it, but will be using a PPS type Mamod reversing block and cylinders so may just RC that and have a simple shut off valve.

Try Martins Models Tel 01544 230777.He does Regner engines.

Paypal - the modern way to pay. I expect postal orders will become common again as well. Can you imagine the cost a bank wants to set one up with a card payment recieving system? - and some people think paypal are expensive.

Probably just the same as they did before we had cheque guarantee cards. I remember that!

Since when were they to withdraw cheque cards in April??? Cheques are to remain in place till 2021 or there abouts.

Well my new PPS boiler has arrived. (first class service) I have a few questions:

Its unpainted, so will normal Enamel paints be ok or should I use BBQ paint? ( to be fair it won?t really be seen)

Is there any way I can insulate the outside of it, if there is any point?

How do I cut gauge class?

I feel guilty that I seem to only ever ask questions not give answer!

Barclays wrote and told me stopping the garantee but will still have cheques for a few years. I don't think chques will last as long as 2021 maybe 2015.

Seems little point really apart from them trying to make everyone do what they want, i.e. stop using cheques.

Hornbeam, if you need to paint your boiler use something heat resistant, such as Halfords can supply.

Traditionally 'Pot' boilers were insulated with wooden strips held in place by steel or brass bands. I'd have thought coffee stirrers would be ideal.

To cut gauge glass nick it all round with a very fine file or very carefully (with gloves on) on the edge of a grinding wheel, then just snap it (still with the gloves on). The end can be cleaned up on the wheel as well if needs be.

Thanks, car paint it is. Its a really nice boiler. Three cross tubes, and very well made. Also very happy with the service from PPS- first class!!

It actually still works out a little less than Paypal, Alan, even if using the bank's online card processing services - and if you still use a PDQ terminal rather than the online system, then it's considerably cheaper. Paypal is still the most expensive way for me, as a business, to receive payments from customers - but because folks want to use it, I have to offer it.

Bob, you didn't tell him how many you break before you get the hang of it ! :rolf:

Now Neil, you know that 'practice makes perfect!':wits: :wits:

I have found that a small continuous nick all the way round usually does the trick first time. The problem is that true gauge glass is actually toughened like pyrex, so does take a bit more effort and care.

If at first you don't suck seed . . . . do like the toothless budgie! :rolf::rolf::rolf:

funandtrains, I wonder what all these old fashioned small retailers / manufacturers will do in April when cheque garantee cards are withdrawn?

as someone that depends on cheques for sales its not too big a problem as a cheq sent in the post just has to clear, if someone comes thro the door with a book then thats a whole lot more complex. but there is that old bacs system out there still in use and works very well if a bit cumbersome. anything is better than an e/cheque, the most primitive of all money transfers ever invented ,
