I have just returned from a visit to Germany which included attending a concert, a visit to Xanten and a trip down memory lane to Lippstadt where I lived more than 40 years ago!!
Dortmund has an extensive transport system including main line railway, S Bahn and U Bahn. The latter is a light rail system which replaced trams in 1976. There are still signs of the original tram tracks in the centre of Dortmund, however the current U Bahn is all underground in the centre but above ground in the outskirts. One interesting point on the U47 route is the crossing of a double track standard gauge line at right angles. On either side of the crossing the light rail reduces to single track. An out of use signal box on the standard gauge line used to control the crossing.
