I assume these tankers are used to transport water for the steam locos on the Harz

Do they have to 'import' the water because the local H2O is too hard, or is it just to get the water to other parts of the network?

I see a few HSB fans have brought the new LGB model, so do they also have metre gauge tankers too....

Gizzy,

As far as I understand, the water tank cars are part of the HSB fire protection measures for the summer months and not for supplying water for the the locos. The wagons also serve as advertising boards for the HSB anniversary.

The label on the box states "Loeschwasserwagen" translated on the label to "Fire Extinguisher Water Car"

No Gizzy, thats not the reason they are used. they are standard gauge wagons which sit on a transporter wagon and are full of water for firefighting. As a lot of the HSB network is within forested areas with very little road access and the steam loco's are coal fired, the risk of a fire in the drier season is high. When we were there last year we saw two. One at the top of the Broken mountain and this one at Drei Annen Hohne station.

Yes - fire water. the amount of water a steam locos uses you would need train loads of wagons for boiler use!
This is the one at the Broken summit and is the closest to the LGB model.

Thanks for the explaination guys?

Water for fire fighting would have been my next suggestion!

I guess none of these tankers are metre gauge then, but all standard gauge on roll-wagen? You don't see many tankers on narrow gauge, except for maybe RhB....

every line needs one, in these droughty days..
