In the old days, people ran the motors on pure dc (not pulsed) and that would go through the inductor to the motor.

They also put high frequency AC on the rails at the same time... a light bulb would light, but it would be changing too fast for the motor to respond, but the motor would "sing". An inductor in series with the motor would block the HF AC for lighting, but would allow the DC for the motor to come through.
