7/8ths Baldrig with a twist

Hi all,

A little while ago I asked about the Accucraft Lawley power chassis and got some very helpful advice. Anyway I thought I'd post the reason behind those inquiries! I have had a Simply 7/8ths Baldrig body in 7/8ths scale on the shelf for about a year awaiting inspiration. Originally I had intended to just use the kit as is on an Edrig/Ragleth power chassis, but as there are a few about now I thought I'd like something a tad different. Enter the 0-6-0 chassis. This I felt would give a different look to the locomotive and produce something with a nice chunky feel. I drew a few designs freehand and decided on a simple conversion with a rear bunker.

Anyway I have never tackled a metal kit like this before... my soldering has been limited to little bits of metal and wiring! So I took advice and my time and to be honest its been fairly easy. I made up a new tool box for the top of the side tank where the original bunker had been and also cut and added the rear bunker. Instead of the kits flat beading for around the top of the tanks I added some half round brass and this helps with the chunky feel.

I am awaiting detailing parts from Talisman brass, such as the tank top fillers and handle and padlock etc for the toolbox.

The body on the loco looks nice and big.... here it is with the other project that is on the go, an IP Engineering brake van somewhat modified.....

Right here's a bit more......
Yesterday I finally added a few rivets on the roof and tank sides (Only a few though, my sanity needs preserving), plus I have begun to address the sand boxes and the associated castings. These need cleaning up and fixing... in this shot they are just balanced in place!

I must sort out a nice handle for that gas valve control.... its really too obvious with that plastic knob.

Still needs a lot of detailing..... whistle for one thing....but then again do I go for the real thing?

Impressive (and delightful) looking loco!

Excellent work....

Looking nice Steph, really nicely done too, the only other thing is the dome looks a tiny bit skinny compared to the chimney. Have you considered a trip to GRS to look at the domes they do for their kits as there might be something a tiny bit bigger that would slip over the existing one. Their gauge 3 kits might be the answer.
Looking at the other beauty in your avatar pic, which I assume has the standard dome, I think it might be the height of the chimney and cab responsible for making it look a bit small.

It looks like an Exmoor 12" or 15" loco, very nice indeed!

Just realised I have not brought this up to date! Quite a lot of progress has been made with the loco!

Loco has been painted in etch primer, more pipe work added and sundry other details including some hefty 7/8ths Bell mouth couplings from Talisman..... needs a nice lamp now too. Spent a fun afternoon making up a couple of fire iron sets from brass for this and my battery powered tram loco!
Still thinking of adding a new dome, maybe a Roundhouse Russell one, I just added one to another build, my battery powered tram loco. Also need to make up a safety cover...

Quite sobering though when you realise the Accucraft Quarry Hunslet is a bit longer than this and only a bit lower in height!

I'm rather impressed by that I must say. The size really appeals, but I don't suppose it would fit throught the LGB bridges on my line. Now, a cabless Hunslet, though......hmmmm....

Simply brilliant piece of work.

I didnt know the Baldrick kit fitted an Accy 0-6-0 though I thought it was for an 0-4-0?

Humm it doesn't fit out of the box! I had to bash it somewhat to fit! The bunker was added and the sandboxes etc were moved for a start. But its not that difficult to do and it produced a loco that is different to the 0-4-0's that have been built.

The size thing is interesting, these dwarf 16mm loco's but are based on really tiny loco's... hence the QH's size comparison!

As Mel just said "resistance is useless".... except for clearances:D This loco is no wider than a 16mm Accucraft (I could have widened it but then you cannot run on other lines) but the height might be an issue!

7/8ths seems lto look more in proportion for Accucraft somehow, looks more balanced......Allan.

Nice work.

It has something of a Sharp Stewart look to it, and 'Southwold' came to mind for some reason, but I'd imagine that in 1" or 7/8" to the foot scale it would be around the size of a Groudle Glen Bagnall, not a 3' gauge loco.......

Yes Steph, it is the height that is the problem, the bridges have cross beams. There is just something about those big models though, that is very appealing - sort of like the first time I saw LGB - 'wow lookit the size of that' kind of thing!

Your artistic skill just makes that model come alive too, can't wait to see it painted. Tthose padlocks too - the devil is in the detail as they say!

Looking gorgeous Steph, I'm sorely tempted by the QH already but I'm a little stayed by not having an outdoor line so I'm wondering if I could follow the same lines but electric. Might have to have a chat with John and see if spares are available so I could get a chassis without boiler.
Inspirational :)

You are making a fantastic job of this Steph' ? I do like bashing generic products myself and I am looking forward to seeing the end result of yours. You won't be leaving the boiler bands brass tho' will you...?
