Accucraft Caledonia smoke unit?

Has anyone fitted a smoke unit to Caledonia? I don't recall seeing anything about fitting one.
I imagine it ought to be relatively easy given the lack of any complex electronics gismos within it.
Any suggestions as to the most effective but still easy to fit welcomed.

hi kirth you could try a 24v unit direct wired to track pickups. i use these on dcc and boy do they smoke.

I've fitted one to mine running on analogue.
I fitted a bank of diodes to a motor lead to increase the starting voltage and used an LM2596 module as descibed below by Trammayo. It needed a fair bit of PTFE tape round the smoke unit to get a snug fit as the chimney is wider than that on an Annie.

Hi Keith,
You may want to consider one of the latest versions of the Massoth pulsed smoke maker. They now make an analog version and a DCC version. I just replaced the old one in my LGB Heidi and it works very well (I'm running DCC). It looks like there is room in the smokebox of the Caledonia for the Massoth unit, and so you would just need a source of track power and a chuff trigger source. I'm not familiar with how Accucraft sets up their axles but I would suggest you use the Massoth hall-effect sensor and drill out the sintered magnet wheel to suit your axle. Muns should be able to give you more advice and I'm sorry I can't be more helpful, but I haven't seen one of those specific locos over here in Canada.

Thanks for the range of options.
The loco is analogue but usually runs on my MTS3 system so lots of smoke even when stationary shouldn't be a problem.
I will have a look the ones suggested primarily to see if my basic electrical know-how and fumble fingers can cope! ;)

Hi Keith,

So when you run it on your MTS3 you are running it at address zero?
Here's another option: Since the latest Massoth DCC version of the PSM has its own decoder, you could actually install that in your Caledonia and control it independently using a different address in DCC mode, while at the same time running the motor in the analog zero mode!:D
Then someday if you want to add a motor decoder you don't have to change the PSM.

I like the sound of that.
Looking at the Massoth site I was not clear if the 19V version is DCC only but I think you have answered my query.
Obviously, I am going to need someone with a Dimax system. Now, wonder who that might be?
PHILBAHN - !!!!!?

Strange, I find that I can't edit my posts. I intended to add - yes I use the 00 'false analogue' on the MTS. Most of my locos are analogue.
