Accucraft Ragleth conversion - some "Swift" action!

Chris Bird

Steam,gardening, photography
Well my Accucraft Ragleth has now had a body transplant using the Swift Sixteen "Owain" body kit. I wish I could claim to have built it, but in fact it was the one that Rob Bushill built for Stoneleigh and then put on Ebay. I did paint it though, after finally deciding on satin black, and here you can see it in action. This is the fourth steaming of the Raleth power unit and the slow running is quite amazing!
You can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZrunc5NYq0 Cheers Chris

Wasn't sure about this body version, but painted it looks better than in the original publicity shot.
Just a little "Rheidol-esque".
Impressive running.

I quite like the sawn-off Rhiedol look, another loco to put on my wanted list.

That's nice Chris. Unless you intend going for lining perhaps you could put a crest on the forward part of the side tanks?
Thanks guys - I quite liked the design to begin with but now I just love it!
John - interesting you should say that because I was wondering if just a lion and wheel logo would do the trick. The problem with lining is that it might make the tanks seem larger.....
I know my railway is set a dozen years before BR but the boss was clearly a man of vision :)

The only question is - where do I get a lion and wheel logo? Any ideas please?
Cheers
Chris

Chris, I wonder if you could do a favour?
I'd like to know the height from rail to cab roof at the centre.

This is because I built a Baldrig body (16mm version) on my Edrig, and it's turned out seriously tall over the cab.

It stands taller than Wrekin & Lawley and I had to raise some bridges to accommodate it.
Thanks

Thanks Chris,

That make her rather more attractive....
Baldrig is 170mm while Lawley is 160mm.
Running on 32mm, Baldrig is a little OTT.
Looks good though!

Well thanks to the link from James, I sent for some cycling lion transfers from Fox transfers. Difficult to choose as they come in sets of three sizes - none quite right. Anyway, I used the set that looked nearest, intended for 2.5" gauge. I know they are a couple of mm over scale ....
What do you guys think - before I varnish them????
All opinions welcome :)
Cheers
Chris

A bit on the big side I think Chris, and possibly in the wrong place.
I've reduced the cycling lion by 25% in the first image. I've left it "as is" in the second but moved it and the nameplate. (How do I get images into the text like you did?) :)
Of course it may simply look odd because you're running on narrow gauge. Maybe on proper 45mm gauge track it will look fine. We'll see on Sunday :)

Steve,
When you've uploaded your image, move your mouse cursor to where you want the image to appear and left click. Then move to the image name and click. The image name will move to you chosen position. You can do this with several images.

Now... How do we move bits of picture around the frame like you do?

Thanks Rob. I'll have to give it a go.

Ah! Excellent. I don't think it's intuitive though. Thanks for your help.
And in answer to your question, I simply copied Chris's image into Paint Shop Pro and then copied the "cycling lion" and made it a new image and then resized it to 75%. I used the clone brush to wipe out the original "cycling lion" and nameplate and then copied and pasted the reduced size "cycling lion" back to where I wanted it on the image. If it sounds complicated it isn't. It took me longer to write how to do it than actually doing it!
Chris is visiting me on Sunday and bringing the loco so I shall be able to see it in the flesh. He runs on 32mm whereas I run on 45mm (hence my little leg pull) but he is going to re-gauge it especially. (Maybe he won't now he's seen my comment :) )
Steve

And here's the smaller version of the "cycling lion". I'm showing off now!

Well, I don't know Rob. I've done something wrong so I'm not so clever after all!

Well Seve - after that - I shall insist on running in 32mm gauge up the sleepers:D
Seriously though, it is really interesting to see the diffferent options - though there was no re-sizing option in the transfer instructions......

If you look at the logo on Lyd and indeed on the model (GR199 page 15) you will see that the logo is huge - probably because it is a standard gauge one. I like your version without the nameplate, but could not live with the nameplate where you have put it. In the end it is only a tenner down the pan if I wash it off ........

Are there any other views out there?
Cheers
Chris

Personally I think it looks rather smart as is particularly in your first photo, which shows off the VoRish shape of the loco best. To my eye it looks too squashed when both nameplate and logo are towards the back. Yes, perhaps it's a couple of mm bigger than it might be, but the same could be said of the cylinders and valve gear! The VoR locos themselves have sported some quite large logos over the years! So my vote would be to keep swift proudly carrying it's Lion and Wheel BR Logo as it is! Lovely looking loco too, however it's finally badged.

I like Steve's version with the reduced size lion - which I guess you could do by using a transfer intended for a different scale? I'd also definitely consider re-siting the nameplate to give more transfer location options. My 2p worth.
