Accucraft / Roundhouse differences

Warning - thread drift

Tag, good to see you up and about or at least communicating. How did the refit go?

Steve

Still partly on sticks but getting better every day. Am looking forward to walking and steaming again....

So ... tried it with only half water. Running still no better. But I found a loose nut on one of the 2 pipes that come from the superheater to the valve chests. Tightened that up and now it doesn't leak but still no steam from the nuts however loose!! Plenty of oily water if you undo them lots though!!

Logic suggests two possibilities.
1/ Water pickup with the steam from the boiler.
2/ Condensation in the steam pipe/cylinders.
Any chance of disconnecting the superheater pipe in an attempt to discover which?

Maybe post a picture of said loco just incase an eagle eyed member spots something out of the ordinary?

I'm completely guessing but there are distinct differences between the regulators on roundhouse and accucraft. I can't remember which is which (accucraft is a needle valve?)

Have you taken them apart and cleaned them, maybe it's sticking or something as it sounds like you have nothing and then full throttle.

Well today I decided to wash out the boiler and this is what came out when I flushed it out!!

I am sure I didn't put the big piece in there!! Any ideas appreciated. I am also going to email Roundhouse!! This may well suggest why its not run that well. I have a few people to reply to pm's - I will do that soon.

looks like a piece of plastic tubing off a filler bottle, dropped into the boiler and melted when the water was low at the end of a run. The bits wouldn't be good in your steamline.

The locomotive should not be priming like this ? certainly on a half full boiler. I take it that the regulator will open fully and is not slipping round the shaft?? Otherwise we have a problem that will will have to work through a bit at a time and we will have to half and half ? ie check that steam at full pressure is coming out of the main steam pipe before it gets to the cylinders...

Each post so far has been about more problems - but not this one!! Today I checked all nuts etc were tight, and took the cyliner tops off to check the basic timing. When I did this I found that the internal part that slides over each steam hole (they probably have a proper technical name unknown to me) seemed to be slightly scuffed. It was the base plate (in which the holes are drilled) which was scuffed, which I assumed was down to insufficient lubrication from the lubricator. I thoroughly oiled the whole cylinder block, sealed it back up and hey presto it ran much better. I also worked far harder to drive the loco - before I had tried to find a single regulator setting that would give power for the curves but not too much power for the straights. This time I added power before the corners and almost closed the regulator for long straights. Its like a different loco now!! And when I undid the nuts steam came out!! I guess its more lubrication, tighter steam line nuts and better driving!!! Thank you to everyone for their help.
