They announced the intention to produce 'em just after I aquired 4 kits for my own W&LLR ~ I think there's a moral to be attached there somewhere!

I'd be interested to know how many different fleet numbers they're to produce.

I have requested Accucraft provide some information regarding numbering, meanwhile this from their latest dealer bulletin:

"We are pleased to be able to show you the first CAD image of the W & L cattle van (in original form) which is now in the tooling stage."

"Because the Great Western rebuilt the wagons shortly after taking the line over, we are offering three versions, fully-lettered in W & L light grey and data only in light and dark grey."

Happy steamings,

Hi Everybody!

At the risk of being the evil fairy at this feast, I am slightly puzzled as to what these wagons are supposed to represent (even tho' I'll be buying a couple). Glyn Williams' book on the W&L shows the following history (and pictures):
[*]The Cambrian built some five plank open sheep wagons (numbers and quantities unknown)[*]The GW subsequently converted 6 of these to open cattle wagons with framework sides backed by corrugated iron (p257 of the book has a picture of one of GW conversions)[*]The GW built 2 covered cattle wagons for the VoR and subsequently converted them to 2' 6" gauge (nos 38088 and 38089) What I cannot trace is any covered W&L/Cambrian cattle or sheep vehicles, and the only covered vehicles as per the draft model were the two GW-built items, which obviously never ran in W&L light grey. So, please Mr Accucraft, can we have these lovely cattle trucks available in GW livery? [Not an option currently on offer].

Kind regards

Graham Hewett

From the Accucraft website describing this model:

"The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway was well provisioned with goods rolling stock when it was opened in 1902, all of which was supplied by Pickerings and the majority of which survived the closure of the line. The initial order included two of these vans built to carry seven beasts, equipped with top doors and ramp with a single brake and later fitted with safety chains."

Accucraft advise me they are not lettering them in GWR livery because the Great Western rebuilt them from the form they are producing. However they have provided some 'data only' ones in the GW dark grey for anyone who wants them to match their other GW stock in a non historical way.

Happy steamings,

John

Graham, turn to page 244 of Glyn Williams' book. There you will find a photo of one of the original W&L closed cattle wagons looking exactly like the one in the CAD drawing above. Pickerings built 2 such wagons which were delivered in 1903.

The open sheep wagons were totally different.

While I welcome these models and salute Accucraft for their efforts, I must admit to finding their reasoning a little ........ errrrrrrrrr ........... fuzzy. OK they have made the decision to model the W&L versions rather than the GWR versions and it is true that these will match the current model of the W&L brake van, but they also made the decision to model the locos as modified by the GWR?

I can see where they're coming from with not marking the cattle wagons as GWR, but you still can't make-up an authentic W&L spec goods train with their off the shelf products?

Sorry if I'm sounding like a rivet counter, but if they are going to make such decisions, maybe they should be a little more consistent?

John

You are right; I have since tracked down the two GHW&L PIckering covered cattle trucks. The before and after GW mods pictures suggest a very modest change to the side planks only.

The sheep wagons were built on the shorter 4 wheel flat wagons with removable sides. The cattle wagons were based on the bigger 4 wheel vans. I'll have a word with a mate who does most of the W&L stock in 7mm as he knows all the dates.

I think there was a fair crossover in the dates of rebuilds so it probably is possible for a limited period.

Not according to Ralph Cartwright's book Paul. By the time the locos were "Swindonised" in 1925/26, for instance, both brake vans had had their balconies removed at least 3 years earlier.

These are fleet numbers 7 and 8 in the W&L livery, also available in plain W&L grey 'data only' and plain GW grey 'data only'.

Happy steamings,

Many thanks John, that was what I'd hoped.

I bow to the man with the facts at his fingertips
Oh well I won't be backdating my Countess! I was going to have a couple of my mates 016.5 kits then the Accucraft one was announced so I went for that in G, but I had decided that I prefered the front end of the GW rebuild and the cab of the original and considered a hybrid as I wasn't actually modelling the W&L.
Fortunately with Camberwick they bought the little known third and fourth W&L locos Duke & Duchess (that's my story  ) and some more Pickering cattle vans so I can run them together :rolf:

Hi all,
My two Accucraft WLLR cattle wagons arrived today from John at TrackShack. They are very good indeed and have small bolts just under the roof line at each end to enable the roof to be easily removed and cattle added. Mine are Nos. 7 and 8 which were the two orginal Pickering wagons as delivered in 1903.

I under stand that the first batch has already sold out so it might be a long while if you haven't got yours on order. I ordered mine in about January last year! but it has been well worth the wait.
Cheers!
