My connie seemed to lock up slightly a couple of times when run last week, I know that's a possible sign of gear meshing problems, although as yet I haven't had time to check it over thoroughly for other possibilities such as loose counterweights, rodding or even the gearbox/motor mount issue. One more job for the next wet afternoon I guess.

Further to my post back in August re my connie locking up slightly: I gave it a full strip down service a couple of weeks ago, turns out it just needed re-greasing to sort things out. However I did notice the first small signs of the main axle gear cracking up, so as I precaution I ordered one of the new Bachmann brass gear and axle assemblies from the US spares department. Just under £12 inc. postage, very reasonable I think.
It's arrived today. Although no immediate rush to fit it, if I get really bored with Xmas TV or wish to escape from visiting inlaws I can imagine I'll be disappearing to the hobby room to get started!

Nick, if your connie is starting to stutter, check the side rods as well. It is typical for them to come loose. A dab of blue lock tite really helps in this circumstance.
I'm a little late coming into this but the connie drive gear failing is a common one. If an original hasn't failed it will sometime. Mine held out for two years before it quit. I replaced it with a custom drive from Barry's Big Trains, a dealer here in the USA. The brass gear is is a great alternitive as well and makes the great looking loco a great runner.

Yeah, thanks Terry and welcome to GSC! I suspect when I stripped it down and re-greased it I will have corrected any loose rods etc. It certainly runs well again now.
I haven't got round to fitting the new brass gear yet, I might save this job until it becomes necessary but on the other hand not doing it immediately runs the risk of the original gear damaging something else when it finally disintegrates. Hmm.... I did quite enjoy working on the beast, so I guess really should get it done now.

Just a note to conclude , My Connie sat at the back of the shed until today when I was dispatched to another railway for use in their forthcoming project. Tis a shame. She was a beauty to my eye in terms of appearance:love: but somewhat delicate in nature:brokeheart:
