Does anyone have the parts diagram for this loco? It looks like the new 'Lyn' but mine is the american outline model.
One axle gear has worn and needs to be replaced. Is the gear still available for the old model ( the new model has an all metal gearbox) ?

I don't think that any spares are available for the old model. However, Bachmann do have a lifetime repair or replace guarantee. I believe that some folks have returned old broken Lyns and had new model versions sent back! You could try calling them?

Thanks Martin, I will contact Bachmann in US today. I have already asked Bachmann UK and they have not carried the part for years!

For info. I suspect that the above is restricted to certain countries such as the USA, and maybe isn't valid in the U.K.
I respectfully suggest that anyone not in the USA who wishes to have work done under guarantee by Bachmann checks the fine print first.

Thanks for info Neil. I suspect that you are probably correct but they might just have a spare gear in stock.......:nail:

Think I might still have the diagram for mine somewhere, I'll make a note to take a look when I get home. I tend to file the literature away so it doesn't get lost when I take the loco out of the box.

somehow I suspect this may be a case of looking around for a matching 3rd party replacement. I seem to remember the same question (gear for the 2-4-2T) has been asked before on GSC.

Hi Tony
I have sent off requests to the service dept at www.bachmanntrains.com and also to the NWSL guys who make gears over in the US. Hopefully I will have a solution or else the loco will have to be scrapped as it is not worth the effort in trying to use another block etc.
I could always 'wreck' it and use it as scenery.
Perhaps it is an excuse to look for another or even the newer model.

The heisler gears also might still be available as the Heisler is a newer loco than my jobbie (I think mine was Bachmann's first large scale spectrum).try the bachmann uk guys first on 01455841756 and then the US guys at www.bachmanntrains.com

Barry's Big Trains.com
Google him up. He also hangs out on mylargescale web site.
Barry's Big Trains specializes in replacement drive trains for Bachmann 4-6-0 Large or 'G' scale locomotives. Well worth a go.
Hi Ross
I have seen his chssis kits before and they do look mighty good for the Annie (if a little expensive) but unfortunately he doesn't do anything for the 2-4-2

Tony, if I do not get any joy from the replies from Bachmann and NWSL and I do not want to use her as scenery, I will definitely give you the nod.

Hi, have tried this site, http://hyaklocoworks.weebly.com/bachmann-2-4-2t.html < Link To http://hyaklocoworks.weebly.com/bachmann I'm pretty sure I've seen one of the diagrams for that loco on there....Tony

Great stuff Tony, many thanks for the link. I had found my copy but it was badly ripped so a fresh one is extremely useful. As this was Bachmann's very early Spectrum loco, they did a simpler set of diagrams ie 1 instead of 3 or so pages and they did not do an exploded diagram of the chassis itself showing gears, motor etc. But it is a good reference for me so that I can get it all back together!

So... assuming you cannot get hold of an original Bachmann part and need to consider 3rd party replacements, have you removed and measured the gear that needs replacing? Then you can calculate the Module and try various internet sites that sell gears, such as MotionCo, HPCGears and others that folk have suggested in other GSC threads.

Here's some links for how to calculate the Module:
http://mdmetric.com/tech/modulegeardata.pdf
http://www.khkgears.co.jp/en/gear_technology/pdf/module.pdf

I've had success with MotionCo in the past, I sorted out a ToyTrain Porter for much less than the cost of replacement LGB gears.

I have an electronic copyof the parts diagram for a Lyn. They should be the same. Only trouble is I have been away from this forum for so long that I cant seem to work out how to post it.

Hi Nick
Thanks for the info. I have sent of a request to HP and will see what they send back. MotionCo do not do the correct size unfortunately.

Ron, many thanks, I have now got a facimile of the original Bachmann diagram for the 2-4-2T so can see how to piece it back together when and if I get a new gear 8|

Contacted the parts/service dept at Bachmann USA (Bachmann UK really have no backup for US outline Large scale) and they have asked for the loco to be shipped back to them even though said that they do not have parts for it. I did ask if I could remove the weights as they would make shipping cheaper and are also totally non involved with mechanical or electrical operation but I think that they want the WHOLE loco...............

Well
the old battered loco was too old for replacement parts.....
Specialist gear makers were going to charge £50 to make one gear so....
I sent the old loco off to Bachmann US on 12th October, it reached them on 25th and they sent me a card on the 30th saying that it should take 4 weeks before being sent back to me.
It is now only the 16th November and a nice pristine red box has been delivered. In it is a brand new 2-4-2 Columbian unlettered. The cost was the shipping over to them and a bill for $30. I had taken out the weights and the shipping only cost £18 plus the bill £20 so a new loco for £38.
Thank you Bachmann. Easy no quibble replacement or repair and quick turnaround what more could you ask from a manufacturer.
