bachmann spectrum 2-4-2 baldwin (old model) gear issue

I haven't had a chance to test her yet but she is a good looking gal. The plastic tanks have a very sharp finish that makes them even look like metal.
I am more than chuffed (geddit) with the service. I think it was the 'no problem' approach 'just send her to us' that had me really bowled over. And also the incredible speed of turn around taking in the shipping etc.

I've sent for an "Annie" replacement gearbox intending to (try to) put it into an original "Columbia" 2-4-2 with a stripped gear as no other alternative seemed to be cost effective. It was dispatched by Bachmann on 1st November... still waiting... will report on progress as and when.

I must contact them about my duff Connie, If they cannot repair it I would happily settle for a Baldwin tank as a replacement.

It is coincidental that I have an Aristocraft mallet that has got problems with both motor blocks and that the gears have degraded due to wheels going out of quarter (a common problem apparently). I will be sending them back to Aristo and hopefully their service will be as good as I have had from Bachmanns (I will not be expecting a new loco though!).
I think that they replaced the old 2-4- with a new one asthey do not have parts for that older version any more. They may have parts for the connie. But this seems to be their policy, so keep your fingers crossed

See! Told you, didn't I?

I said some people got new ones. Not saying who though.

My new one is with Axel at Train-li being chipped, sounded and with luck, having a pulsed smoke system fitted. Can't wait!

A couple of photos of the replacement 2-4-2 that those nice people at Bachmann USA have provided
I am not sure which smoke stack looks the best

I reckon the Balloon stack looks best ;)

I also had a similar good experience with the US service department, sent in my old US-style 2-4-2 (the one with the tender) and received back a brand new 2-4-2 Baldwin, the same unlettered version as pictured here. Excellent service for $30 plus the cost of outward shipping! They even phoned me in advance to ask if that was acceptable.

I've sent a few different things to Bachmann over the years (G and HO) and always had great service. They're not the quickest, and it might take a few weeks/months, but you'll get it back eventually. Never had any experience with the UK service department so I don't know how it compares.

Cheers, Glen

Hadn't believed they would honour the lifetime guarantee outside the US so haven't tried contacting them until now. I have two tender 2-4-2s with stripped gears so it'll be interesting to see how they respond. Though a new black non tender replacement would be a shame as one is in UP red which matches the rest of my SP loco, cars & wagon fleet.

I have already asked Bachmann UK ........
Bachmann UK seem to be a complete waste of space when it comes to US outline G scale, Ian !

Since my post of 19/07/12 I've swapped emails with Bachmann USA and they're still quite happy to honour the guarantee for both my tender locos. So it looks as though Rattlesnake Creek is going to get it's first tank locomotives!
Though it does seem surprising that no-one does a sensibly priced replacement gear wheel! There must be thousands of non working Columbians stuffed in the back of cupboards.
