Bachmann to make the Sterling Single "Emily" in large scale

Mmmmmmmm that'll be one to get  BGJ I model USA outline or I'd be up sh*t creek with SWMBO like you, Vic

Think that will be one on the list to get as a companion for Percy..... and a Toby when I decide where to source him from.

Pity the good Reverend didn't pick a Dean Bogie single rather than the Stirling; it's always been one of my favourites since the days of the matchbox model in the 50s whereas by comparison the Stirling always looks unbalanced to my eyes. Never the less, grandchild pressure from at least two points is bound to be brought to bear on the lines of "when will we have Emily on granddad's railway" so I might as well resign myself. I'd like it to be a bit less that $365 US though!

Spoz,
I daresay the local price will be closer to $300 - $320Aud 'retail'. If you purchase from the States then pricing would be close to James discount prices (around $180-$190). Thus 'landed' cost would be around $270.00. Of cause, we have to await release in a few months.

I am 'anticipating' release to go with my several Emily coaches.

Id much prefrer them to make some of these....

that new bachmann loco is going to have p*ss poor traction on anything but the level if it is indeed powered by the two large wheels. it might even be worse than LGB locos at gripping the rails, that would be bad.

Alongside the Sterling Single, Brake Van, and Private S.C.RUFFY coal truck, they are bringing out another starter set......wait for it....Thomas' Christmas Delivery. Basically Thomas with a snowplough, Christmas hat and Tinsel transfers on tanks, a troublesome truck in red and an Emily coach - both with festive decorations. There doesn't seem to be any mentions of selling the coach or truck separately so I'm not sure how well it would sell. RRP is $525 (about £330).

Emily wasn't a Reverend Awdry creation!, nor even a Christopher Awdry creation - she doesn't appear in the proper books. Toby would have been a more sensible bet I always thought, sure he'll be next.

I agree James. Just imagine how much easier it would be to make the castings for Toby compared to Emily? Plus, just about any motor block could be fitted, no valve gear required etc. Makes you wonder how these decisions are made doesn't it?

Very simple. Emily coaches were a simple retool on Annie and Clarabel and B'mann needed some British outline coaches for "Lyn" (forget about road specific prototype). Emily was a natural progression and will find much favour in the marketplace.

The OO Emily has the single drivers and the trailing axle of the front pony truck powered so it's a 2-2-2-2! I guess they'll do the same in G.
Have to agree though that one of the other main characters like Toby would make more sense as kids all know it, whatever the age ;)

The Bachmann Stirling single will be a nice model to convert, two versions, later years saw the addition of a dome on the boiler. see pictures below. Alyn

Looks naked without a dome!

Its the fact that its a single! with the BIG DRIVER and a good kitbasher could convert this drive chassis into something close to a Dean 4-2-2 or maybe even a Dean 2-2-2 or many other single types: But its that an affordable BIG DRIVER chassis is now available in large scale thats exciting to me!

Agreed that Emily is not an original character, however I'd imagine that the original producers of the program, and maybe Bachmann as well, are trying to appeal to a large scction of the population sadly under represented in the members of our hobby, namely females!

Perhaps a young girl would rather have an Emily that a male engine. Grandparents would perhaps acquire an Emily if their granddaughter has shown an interest in trains.

If this is the strategy then lets hope it works.

Of course we want Toby as well!

Those pics from the mole are interesting as they show on 1 page the problem with the current preserved single. The tender is much smaller, cant remember the original Railways. The NRM have a spare tender that is or about to be converted so that she will look like the 2nd and some of the subsequent pictures with the larger(I think) GNR tender which apparently she spent most of her life running with. Interestingly the Bachman Model appears to have the larger GNR type of tender so no conversions needed if the Model in G has that one. However if you want her to look as she is currently preserved, well out with Mr Razor saw!

I definately concur with Tramcar Trev, the Steam Tram (dummy) he show would be a better choice. But would not go with the Thomas theme. GRS did do a Toby, not sure if it is still available.
