Im thinking of getting a battery diesel for my line, but Im struggling to work out what would be appropriate for the 1930's. I know the ex WD simplexs would of been around but what else was around? (my googling has been unhelpful)
Assuming you want a narrow gauge ic powered loco, Fowler, Hunslet, Hudswell-Clarke, Ruston-Hornsby and Baguley had all started building petrol mechanical locos in the 1920s and by the 1930s were making diesel mechanicals in the UK. There were also smaller builders around. US builders like Plymouth, Davenport and Whitcomb/Baldwin were active in the field before WW2, as well as continental builders, eg. O&K.
In 16mm scale UK prototype, Essel Engineering have a ready to run late '20s Fowler in their range and Brandbright have a model based on a Kerr-Stuart design. For kits, IP Engineering have a '30s Ruston, a Simplex and an O&K.
On the used market there are also several out of production models of '30s prototypes that turn up now and again.
