Burner mesh

Hi all

Thinking of doing the ' mesh mod' on my accucraft leader burner. Just wondering where I can get the mesh from? Local halfords do some ally stuff but don't think this is of any use?

Has to be stainless steel Simon ? ally will just melt. Try here

I would go for this one myself

Tesco do stainless steel flour sieves etc have a look if you have a store local to you . There is more than enough for your burner.
John.

Thanks for asking the question Si. I was about to do the same.

My next question is: How do you fit one? Does anyone have a link to a 'How to' page?

Does this mod quieten the burner any? The noise is one thing that I don't like much, to keep the noise on mine to a more acceptable level you have to turn it down so much that the boiler doesn't keep pace.

Please keep us informed. Whilst I don't much fancy pulling mine to bits, I would if necessary.

If I were you I'd splash £26 on a Milton Loco Works conversion. It'll transform your loco, trust me.;)

Hi everyone

I'm not on the garden railway internet much these days but I keep watching things going on 8D.

That's my Earl thread mentioned above on the Garden Railway Club site - and the supplier I use is also listed in the suppliers at http://www.gardenrailwayclub.com/suppliers/inoxiastainlesssteelmesh . Seems like they are still there because the link still works.

One of the things that is always worth doing on GRC is using the search box. There si a lot of info buried in there. We tried to find a way to organise it to be more accessible and the best way we found is just to use the Google search box at the top right.

Is Matt (brianthesnail) still around? He did a whole project on burners for his degree dissertation. Some very interesting reading in there.

Hope this helps :)

And bobg, yes, it does make it a bit quieter, so you can turn it down and it will still make enough steam without so much (if any) roar. It's not such a big strip-down on an Accucraft.

your right, I should have searched this site more first.

Anyway Ive got some mesh and have fitted it. just waiting for some paint to dry on the chassis and will test it.

It's not so much the actual strip-down, Graham, it's the space and time to mess with it i.e. gotta be worth it.

well.... the best £2.49 I've spent! I got a stainess splash guard from Tesco- looks like a mesh ping png bat! finer mesh than a sieve.

I've just steam tested it and the difference is fantastic. No longer does the water ejected when cold put the burner out. I'm able to keep the gas really low and it stays alight. Its also more quiet mostly because I can keep the gas down.

I also added added grease to the O ring on the gas valve.

I did have to take all the body off ( more on that later) but worth it.

As I've said shame Accucraft cant make burners that work in the first place.

So you've now got enough mesh to do another dozen at least? :rolf::rolf:

Reckon I could do another 20!:D

As I say mine was useless untill I fitted the mesh. Ive changed nothing else in the way I do things so in my eyes the burner was an issue. However i'm not saying I know eveything and am aware that all engines are different BUT not had this issue with my Pearse, Merlin, Roundhouse and Regner Locomotives.
