changing the funnel on a stainz

Hi guys,

I have an LGB stainz from a starter set bought about 6 years ago.

I've been slowly adding bits of detail and what not to make the loco look a little more british and a little more unique to my railway.

I've been looking to change the funnel on the loco to the straight version but the only straight funnel I can find is this one http://www.dragon-gscale.co.uk/lgb-65103-straight-smoke-stack-kit-18-volt-463-p.asp

Do I really need to replace the locos smoke unit too?

Any advice would be gratefully recieved

The one you linked to won't fit your loco, Rob - it's the older style for locos where the long metal shaft of the funnel passes right down through the boiler and frame and is secured by an external nut under the loco. The funnel on the newer Stainz like yours has a much shorter all-plastic shaft, and also has a square section to locate the funnel into the boiler top.
I'm not even sure that LGB make a straight funnel to fit a new-type Stainz, all the more recent versions I've seen have the large spark arrester....

I think Graham Freestone did a conversion of one of these funnels??
And I reckon it was on this site! - Now if I can just find it..
You can get the smoke units from LGB, Massoth, Seuth.. Probably others as well.

Form memory:
Graham cut most of the large bowl away, then mounted the funnel in an electric drill.. Spun it up and gently used a file to remove the remainder of the plastics.. The final result was quite passable.

Looks like the link to Grahams set of instructions no longer works, so the spare part route may well be your best bet..
 
Just a thought - if the intention is to British-ise the loco, what about a cast or turned metal funnel from, say, GRS or a similar range of parts? You may have to bodge/adapt the mounting for the funnel, but it could change the appearance of the Stainz significantly and probably wouldn't cost any more than a replacement LGB funnel?

FWIW, for the new stainz, it just so happens the stack from an LGB corpet fits, because I did so on one of mine.

It is an exact fit, I know this first hand.

The reason I later removed it was it seemed rather 'thick' to my eye, for a Stainz, at least as I have seen them, but not for a loco in general.
If you can locate one, say in Germany from champex-linden or other parts resources, you can be assured it will fit and do the job.

Interesting to know, Steve..... wonder what the Corpet would look like with a Stainz balloon stack in exchange? I don't know how common they were on French-built locos, but it would give an interesting bit of variety.... ;)

The U class and Stainz Straight funnel is listed as a LGB spare, I asked Peter at Chalks, but it's marked as currently not avalible
