Colmans Mustard Factory, Norwich - scratch building model...Progress

cbeckett

Osier & Woodhurst (UK), Gosnells Extension (OZ)
I like to make models of some of the iconic buildings in Norwich, remembered from my (misspent?) youth. Carrow Road - or Carrer Rood - near the Canaries Football ground

This one I kicked off in mid-December, and will add to it as I go...half-relief, btw, to cover a wall...

The materials are:

Plasterers` edging strips for the basic skeleton - free from a skip
Covered by peg-basket plastic - 5 sheets - ouch $10
Covered where need be, by old CD cases - free from a skip
Covered (Awaiting delivery) - Brandbright brick sheets. (Big ouch - $20 worth)

All the rest of the components (not shown yet) are made from junk.

Size - 1m x 0.5m

The first two pictures show the original - long gone, and I`m only modelling a section of the 22 acre site - essentially the loading/unloading bit, which was served by wherries, and railways (GER) on the other side of the building.

The other pics show progress to date, with my little helpers too....

Managed to get the "hoists" sorted out, but still awaiting airmail delivery of bricksheets to rock up. Used Visio to knockout a "blackboard" - so if you know Norfolk, the names albion,Maud and Dragon will be familiar to you.....

Which made me think - a model of Norwichs`  Dragon Hall? Would be quite easy to do....

I well remember the Colman's Mustard factory in 1962. My mum won 1000 guineas in a competition organised by Colmans and I went with her to the factory to receive the cheque (I was 11 yrs old). About the only time our family has ever won anything. I even remember the slogan which my dad devised as the tie breaker - "You'll savour the flavour for longer". I think they used the money to pay off their mortgage. Understandably, I have great affection for Colman's.

Great story Rik. 1000 guineas was a lot of cash then.

Yes, I think our house cost £1500 way back then - a lot of money!

Just realised how amateurish the model looks at this stage - but all will be covered up - soon, and then revealed to the forum....

With this model, I've NDT'd it the normal way - dropping from a height, see what falls off - and I'm using materials which should be good for 100 years....

Loved the Colmans' story...I grew up eating mustard with everything, and when I first migrated to Oz, it was a job to find it - eventually did, and yes, I have some on something-or-other every day.

Well, my bricksheet plastic material from Brandbright rocked up...can't wait to get started on it, but it is too darn hot at the moment....so either this evening, or in the morning, when it ISN'T 39c, will get me cracking on...

Drier than a dingos' dirt-pit here (not rude). Even beer doesn't appeal... ???

Plans went awry today anyhow - we opened a cupboard that we don't normally use, to find white ants had built a home in there..fortunately the only wood they had eaten was those carpet-runner thingies, and a picture frame....

So, will be posting progress pictures in the next few days... of the factory, not the flaming ants....

Not at all, it is the Bones from which a super Model will emerge. I feel it important to show the beginnings of that emerging Building. A great iconic Location you have chosen, Coleman's the only Mustard to make your nose 'Ping'.

Weird isn't it? But tea seems to smooth the brow etc etc...

(BTW - a dirt-pit is the scraping they make in the sand, to keep cool in - said it wasn't rude!)

Being new to building (well, trying to) things..
I am amazed at how things look, and the transformation when the primer-coat goes on..

Having the vision to see through the multi-coloured collection of 'bits' seemingly randomly stuck together (at times) is something I have not yet got..

keep up the good work! - Despite the cold, and wet, here.. You can keep the temperatures though!

I`ve  attached a piccy of the first of the Brandbright sheets - just taped in place, with one window "cut through" to show the internal frame - external frames will go on later, once brickwork painted.

So very slowly, moving from the multicolored eyesore...a few weeks yet, I reckon...

Looking good Chris! Quite a lot of work involved with this enormous facade but it should look very good when finished.

Either that or dingo-poo... :D :D

No! I said facade ;D ;D ;D ;D

This piccy shows two panels now "cut through" - gives a better idea as to what this beastie will look like. They are just taped in position for now - having "proved the concept", the rest of the brick panels will be easier-ish. The gap between the panels will be covered with a sign "Colmans Mustard Norwich" etc. The "eyebrow" is just taped, but will be over all the windows...painted a stone colour.

Might try a roof panel tonight...SWMBO wants to "shop" (???) tomorrow  >:(

Windows were just centre tacked with superglue, so will modify their positions once the brick panels are mastic`d on...

I`ve temporarily, for the pic, slipped on the two hoists - these will be part of the last details to be glued...

Ahh, now we see it all coming together - Nice.

Well, a good days` modelling - the breeze kept the heat off (34c).

Managed to get all the brick panels on the facade of Colmans Mustard Factory. No roof panels yet, and nothing much painted. Pic below.

For comparison purposes, I have used the global measure of a “Stainz”*

*Historical note:

In 18xx, Professor Stainz invented this universal measure. After centuries of “smears” against his family name, such as “a stainz upon his reputation”, “ stainz in his underpants” (very painful) etc, he felt the need to clean up the family name and leave something to posterity (or possibly posteriors). This he discovered while working on his treatise on bovine excreta. Whilst not recognised as an “Imperial Unit”, it has become a rule-of-thumb (but not in posteriors.... which are still measured in metric or Imperial units, with no thumbs allowed.... usually) by G`railers

Source: Wickedpedia. Or not. Please feel free to add more detail...

Slight progress: with the storms, ain`t gonna get much done today...

However, I`ve fitted a new roof (just need to tile it) which is far better than before. the little support thingies are chopped up CD cases...

Started also on some of the external window frames. Long boring job....

Looks good now the cladding has been added. I can see the advantages in using recycled plastics for an outdoor environment. The pic with the Stainz is useful, gives a sense of scale. Looking forward to seeing the next stage of development.
