Do i need a better controller?

Seconding the recommendation for the Helmsman - excellent products.

Other options would be either an LGB or Piko 5-amp controller and suitable power supply.... something like this:

Elektron. Fahrregler 5 A LGB 51079 + Netzteil + Adapter

or this: PIKO 35002 ELECTRONIC ANALOG SPEED CONTROLLER 22V/5A TopSlots n Trains
plus one of these: WEATHER RESISTANT TRANSFORMER IP67 100VA PIKO 35000 TopSlots n Trains!

Or, take the plunge and decide to go Digital (DCC)..... ;)

Jon.

You need to understand that 5 amps at 22 volts is 110 VA, so you need a supply that is greater than 110va and there are losses, so I would say 120va or more is needed.

Yes, all good points. Some of the track is new, some isnt.
Yes, some are a little grubby. Loco wheels are fine
No, I only am running one loco at one, and i will only ever do such.
Model of PIKO controller: Piko 35006 - Basic Analogue Controller 24v/1.6a

Your "controller" as you call it that came with a Piko starter set is actually a transformer/power pack that's rated only 1.6 amps 0 - 22 Volts. If you're running two motor locos with it, it's really max'd out. You need a larger capacity transformer 5 amp 0 - 22 volts or you can get a separate power pack 5 amp DC and separate controller, such as LGB/Marklin make. I'm not familar with any brands you might have in the UK, but there are lots of options in the USA. The LGB 50111 power pack 5 amp AC Output plus LGB 51070 Controller 5 amp capacity would be one combination.........LGB 51079 is the latest model. Plus you later decide to switch to DCC/Digital power by installing DCC decoders into your locomotives, you can use the LGB 50111 to power a DCC Central Station such as the Piko 35010 5 amp DC or AC input. Caution: Some DCC Central Stations, like the Massoth system, only use DC power packs. Since the combined LGB 50111/LGB 51070 outputs DC power, you can use them to power DCC central stations requiring use of DC power supplies.

But the Piko central station, also made by Massoth for Piko, allows for either DC or AC to power the unit, again, maximum 5 amp input (higher input could blow the Piko unit). I originally bought a Digitrax PS2012 Power Supply adjustable up to 20 amp settings for N, HO, and G Scale layouts........also comes with a Y cable for 5 amp max output for Central Station protection. Here in the USA these units sell discount at some in store and online shops for around $145.
