As I am in the middle of my conversion with an none rear light, which I have retro fitted, I have used 3 mm LEDs, I think you may find 5 mm to large.
 
Ok, thank you. I'll give the 5mm a go (as they are already on order) and if they beat me will go to the 3mm as you kindly suggest.
 
Glad you got it sorted.
It never occurred to me someone would remove the rear LED. The resistor is right up near the LED.
The pic I took shows the splice about half way along the two wires from the cab.
I agree with Greg.
If you intend doing other conversions spend the $10 and buy an inexpensive meter. One that has a continuity beeper built in would be extra useful.
