Morning I have build a new freight yard and want some lights, I have plenty of the old lanten lights but don't seen to get them to work and they are low any ideas Les

Ebay is an excellent source for LEDs in all sorts of colours, shapes and sizes, you can get packs with resistors appropriate for the voltage you're using, and/or pre-wired. I use ebay all the time for such things. Just remember to look carefully at where the items are posted from: if HK or China they'll take a while to arrive.

Maplin is also a good source, but you'll have to sort out your own resistors. We have a Maplin shop a couple of miles away, both my lad and I always enjoy a wander around. I've used Maplin mail order since the 1970s.

Model shops often stock them too. If you go to model railway exhibitions and there may be a trader stocking them.

You could possibly cannibalise a Xmas light set but depends what colour you want. Buy a cheap set from Pound Shop or similar, but of course you'll have to sort out suitable resistors.

Funny enough I am in the process of making a modern yard lamp tower. I was impressed by the one that Mike, (BeaverCreek) had on his layout. I have a ready source of LED's so I used those. I made my own searchlight type lamps from Ally tubing and LED holders. The mast is made of bird cage mesh, folded into a three sided tower. The deck holding the lights is plastic with a thin brass sheet bonded overlay. It is a prototype and I can see room for improvement for the next ones.
I'll post pics tomorrow.

I made some of the old style "goose neck" yard lights. The how and why is on here somewhere but if you can't find them and I can't then look here at my blog an it will be as clear as day...

This is the freight yard light tower that I am working on at the moment. I still have to do the cross braces (Fishing line) and then spray it black.

Blimey! That really does look the dog's wotsits. I bet there's some good illumination there.

With lighting like that you could play night cricket in your yard!

Baseball Trevor. It,s an American themed RR.
Actually, as they are targeted led,s, they only spot about a 6 inch circle, where they fall (individually)

Hmmm baseball. Is Who on first base?

Those are quite nice, I bet they are not cheap though.....

About 25 quid each, Trev. From the pictures they look very neat.

If they are really 'stainless steel' then they should be cat and magpie proof!
