G Scale engine and tender purchase

As far back as I can remember I have wanted to get into G scale trains. But I could never afford to do so. Recently I was at a train show that had an outfit doing a estate sale of a large G scale train - engines, rolling stock, track, buildings etc. This was a piece by piece bid sale. So I made some ridiculously low bid on some engines, rolling stock and track, and to my surprise I won. But my lack of knowledge now comes into play. The engines have pigtails but no tenders. I thought one of the tenders went with one of the engines because I purchased them as a pair. But I don't believe they go together. So now I have two engines that don't run. I have attached pictures of the two engines and the tender. One engine is a Aristocraft C16 2-8-0. Im looking for help on what to do next. Thank you in advance. Tim

Your Aristocraft loco is based on an earlier model made by Delton, to a scale of 1/24th - Bachmann's excellent passenger cars are a great match. Your loco was modelled on a three-foot gauge prototype, still in action in Colorado, but where you'd find a tender - or two - is beyond me. Perhaps somebody stateside can help you out here.

My dear old pal Dick Smith down in Port Orford OR had around twenty of them, used to populate his magnificent Old Mill Lumber line, now, sadly, a Fallen Flag. Controlled exclusively by Airwire, they were literally a hoot to drive, as I found out over the many years we enjoyed in each other's company - playing trains.

I'm corrected - see post below. However, you are more likely to find a photograph of the presidential inauguration of General Washington than a tender for that baby. The C16 tender? I guess that haunting the train shows might be your best option. Again the post below is a better bet.

That one is a Buddy-L loco
That was my first thought too. I have a Buddy-L military set. In my opinion similar to cheap Bachmann models. The pony wheels on mine have rather square flanges and needed a little back-to-back adjustment to run comfortably through LGB pointwork.

I altered the front pony truck too - so it would bear down on the track. I also repainted my loco boiler in black.

Althouch a Bachmann tender (off a Big Hauler) would work, you might have to alter the electrical connection.

Does that set include an exploding box car like the old Triang set had? That was great fun

Yep, having seen the picture of the military version, I remembered the connector, and I was wrong, not like the Bachmann connections.

The sound trigger is an interrupted light beam unit on one of the loco axles.

The pony trucks are a bit of a nightmare, as the mounting points are too short. I don't think I did anything with the rear one, but I lengthened the front one and inserted a pivot screw near the leading driving axle :):)

Fred, we have train shows here, too - BIG ones, like the upcoming Llangollen show early-ish next year, and Peterborough, too. I'll admit that I've never found a 'split' C16, though, much as I'd like to. They are, in Aristocraft makings, very robust and long-lived little locos.
