Yes, I agree..Gavin Sowry said::-\ Never pooh pooh the venerable R1 track. You can get a hell of a lot of trackwork into a given space.... so long as you a prepared to use 'smaller' rolling stock. It is all horses for courses.
There is a 'bit' just outside thw patio door screaming-out to become the Large Grey Boulder Quarry co. - Now that could use R1's no problem!
Rest of the garden is only 22' wide, but about 122' long.. It would be rude not to use large radii curves in that!?
Though it does look as if any GR at home will be a dream for the foreseeable future.. 'we' have a heck of a lot of 'cutting and shutting' to get the 'Harz' layout to fit in the space we have..
