And instead of or as well as, there's a lot you can do in a small space indoors:

 
One thing you could do to give a little more interest is a slight inward curve to the straight length. Trains look nicer when they twist around the curves rather than always curving the same way.
I am aware that doing anything that does not conform the straight all in a row mentality of most humans is terrifying but prototypical narrow gauge railways never do that. They hug the contours of the landscape with minimal imposition which is what makes narrow gauge so naturally wonderful. :nerd:
