HLW Birney Car

tramcar trev

all manner of mechanical apparatus...
Has anyone got one of these? Comments? Thoughts?
I have been offered one at a realistic price but it is for passengers wishing to board from the right so on the LVET it would have to become a "Post & Parcels" tram, not sure that I like the frosted windows either...

I haven't got the HLW one, although I have the Corgi 1/50th model. As the single truck cars were generally not passenger flow types, you could stick a conductor on board and use as a passenger car. I presume you might repaint it in your fleet livery?

Yes, but the entry doors are on the right side, i.e. not on the left side... Yes it would be repainted... If I was really clever with a razor saw I could swap the door openings fore and aft... I think only 1 axle is powered too....
The one I'm being offered is the 4 wheel version...

I had one once Trev, but I fitted a new power truck underneath (LGB) but sold it on many moons ago. Looked a bit small compared to LGB and Bachmann cars.

I'm planning on getting one for use on my trolley line between the main passenger station and the Smurf Village. I didn't know that they doors were only on one side, but couldn't you just spin the car around and run it in reverse?

No doors both sides but these were a one man car and the motorman opened and closed them... On the model they are made for trams that run on the right hand side... so if the model is run on the left the entry door is at the back....

Which is how a lot of trams were in the UK and some early ones in Antipodes (I think). Also that's why I said stick a conductor on board.
