Improving the new (black) starter set Stainz...

The start of many garden railway projects is an LGB starter set - and it was the same for me this Christmas. Whereas in the past you've got the standard Green/Black/Red, now the cheaper 'Big Train' starter set also includes a Stainz - an all black one without smoke or sound.

This to me looked a nicer model, combined with the fact that it would be my 3 year old daughters train (and the stock was more suitable with greater 'play' value) sold it to me!

So when it arrived I was impressed - it ran well and looked great - and as I had in mind to improve some of my second hand stock and therefore needed some custom transfers, I also had some made up for this Stainz - based on http://fgb-berlin.de/neuheiten/spur2m/lgb/Loks/27211_01.jpg < Link To LGB27211. The transfers were drawn up in Adobe Illustrator using DIN1451 font - and a proof printed at 100% to make sure I was happy with the size. I then sent the PDF file off to John at http://www.gscalecentral.net/www.precisionlabels.co.uk < Link To Precision Labels to print up using his ALPS printer (that can print white) onto clear transfer paper. To get a good finish I used Microscale Microsol when applying them.

Here she is after received an all over coat of satin varnish (that has made a massive difference to the slightly plasticy appearance of the black before hand). What do you think?

Lovely Job,I like,I like very much.

oww nice!!

The matt finish certainly lifts the loco from toy to model status.
Now looks like a huge Roco HOe loco

Do my eyes deceive me, or did they finally change that awful looking Allen straight link to a curved Stephenson's type? (Though the old metal valve gear still looks better to me)

When did that happen?

Just a thought, for a 3yo, you might wish to pull at all the piping, etc. like a little kid would, then firmly glue anything that comes off.

or better -just educate them on how to keep 'thier' engine happy and looking great-even explain what things do so
even show them pics of the real thing and marvel with them at how accurate the model is!!

these are nice engines and

you did such a nice job, i thought it was factory stock

i have the green #3 and want to install a light recpetacle in the rear box (which is supplied empty in the cheaper starter engines)

Thanks chaps!

This one Steve has a light front and back - although nothing around the light in the cab, not sure if this is different on the green ones?

My daughter is fully versed on real steam engines after a foot plate visit on the Severn Valley Railway in October - she knows they need coal and water - the coal for fire, that heats the water to make steam that then drives the train forwards. Good enough for me! She's pretty gentle and doesn't poke and prod the locomotive... she's got a coach which the roof comes off to play with - and an open wagon and crates so I'm expecting very little wear really but will keep my eye on the varnish.

mine has lights-(albeit non-directional unlike the earlier versions-)

-was refering to the socket for coach lighting plug ins -its the small 'plug' cover plate on the back of the engine
actually mine does have a cab light

would love to do an uber stainz-constant lighting-upgraded to 3 in the front !, synched smoke, sound, firebox
but theres a lack of space -

and i run analog so i think synched smoke isnt an option

Buntbahn.de fodder there for sure. The Stainz makes a pretty decent meter gauge steam loco with some detail work.

There are a few "build threads" here, just search for Staniz umbau or reko on google.de

First class work again James!

Makes me want to get started on a 2015/7 repaint I have in mind....

Those Buntbahn examples - some of them are really wonderful, keeping the character of the Stainz but really lifting the model. Lovely - thanks for sharing, I'd never have stumbled across that forum by accident!

Nice painting job there, are going to weather it? It's great to get the little ones involved, they have gentle hands when things are explained to them I find

I don't think I'm going to jump into weathering in G-scale just yet - but I'll probably do it one day. I want to start moving onto structures for the line really, using my previous modelling experience to find my feet has been a big help though.

wow the buntbahn site is great-very nice blue stainz-almost looks like its live steam!

and nice detail shots of the others-including a sprung buffer !

Did you dis-assemble the loco before spraying it? I love these locos, but they are a b..ch :wits: to get apart. Mostly I am speaking about the cab section.
