Isle of Man Trip

On return to the Derby Castle terminus, I took a quick detour to the sheds where the original trams 1 and 2 were just visible....

It seems that on the following day (ie today) there was going to be a special event on the MER marking the anniversary of its opening and the two tramcars would be traveling the length of the line and meeting at Laxey for a photo opportunity. Should I stay on yet another day .....? I decided that maybe it was time to return home.

If you have not yet visited the IoM, I can thoroughly recommend it. It is on my list of places to which I`d like to return. The islanders that I met were really welcoming and friendly - maybe it`s because it`s a bit like an overgrown village.....

Thanks for these. Liked the Ant and Bee locos, though I would have thought that 16mm coal-fired models would be challenge. ???

Rik an excellent narrative and nice illustrations. IOM is on my little list, if it could be moved closer to home it would be easier for me to get to. :o

I was looking for a Manx cat sneaking across one of your frames..... Speaking of which did you know that a Manx cat with a long coat is not a Manx but a Cymric cat????

I suspect it is.....There was at one time thriving market in Cymru for Manx cats but they were not Manx cats at all but your garden variety moggie sans tail.....

Great snapshot - nicely put together. Thanks for posting.

Very nicely made video, thanks very much. Definitely going to put the IoM on my list of places to visit.

Just noticed you walked the old peel line and found it a bit boring, that's about right, it makes a great cycle track but the hedges have run riot since closure and the views have been stolen away, shame.
On the other hand the walks from St. John's to Ballaugh on the Northern line are stunning, especially between St.Germains and Kirk Michael. I have a photo record of the Northern walk at https://plus.google.com/photos/116605471267734576154/albums/5636715898066600993?banner=pwa&authkey=CIfkz5eTsNaAmwE

The old Foxdale line is also a nice walk, only two miles but great views over the Foxdale valley

My original plan was to hire a bike at Ramsey and do as much of the MNR as possible before then cycling Peel to Douglas. But I worked out there was no way I could get to Ramsey from where I was staying in Douglas in time to pick up and get the bike back within shop hours, so decided to walk it instead. I kept getting overtaken by people on bikes - and even saw a couple on their way back after having cycled the route. As you say, cycling the best way to see it. Yes, the path was quite overgrown in places. Mind you, given the temperature last Weds, I was glad of the shade - as I was of the kipper bap at the smokery in Peel when I arrived (I needed something to replace the lost salt!) Definitely the best kipper and the best street food I've ever tasted.

Thanks for those links. If I visit the island again, the MNR and Foxdale are definitely on the agenda.
