They're quite expensive but granted they're fitted with a bit more than just a resistor. Personally I think they're overkill in applications where you already have a DC supply (as originally mentoned) and just need the current limiting resistor.
ebay is usually awash with packs of LEDs with fitted resistor or free resistors supplied.
Think I've seen these for sale from one or two of the usual model railway electronics traders and DCC traders, but on the other hand these "universal" LED's may be specific to this US supplier. If I find a UK supplier I'll post it here.
